seems particularly urgent is to enhance our knowledge of the activities of Ottoman<br />

Greeks in India and their links with the Ottoman Empire on the one hand, and<br />

with Indian native traders on the other. Secondly, attention must be drawn to the<br />

social interaction within the Greek mercantile communities in Calcutta and Bombay,<br />

where the great majority of Greeks resided, in order to fathom how forms of sociability<br />

were constructed and to what extent they influenced the conduct of economic<br />

and commercial activities on the spot. This is probably a crucial point, and perhaps<br />

the most engaging one, but it would require a great deal of work in many different<br />

archives and the gathering of a substantial amount of primary sources. The recovery<br />

and investigation of first-hand documents represents, in fact, the first important step<br />

necessary to proceed to a thorough analysis of the economic and commercial activities<br />

of the Greeks in India. Collecting sources of Greek firms in India could also<br />

provide new and interesting material for those who work on Greek economic and<br />

trading activities worldwide, offering new stimuli and ideas about how to approach<br />

and investigate them.<br />
