της Καλαμαριάς. Άρθρα του έχουν επίσης δημοσιευθεί σε συλλογικούς τόμους. Τα<br />

ερευνητικά του ενδιαφέροντα εστιάζονται στην πολιτική, εκκλησιαστική, προφορική<br />

και τοπική ιστοριογραφία. Υπήρξε επιστημονικός συνεργάτης του Ιστορικού<br />

Αρχείου Προσφυγικού Ελληνισμού (Ι.Α.Π.Ε.) του Δήμου Καλαμαριάς. Από το 2008<br />

υπηρετεί ως μόνιμος ιστορικός στο Πολιτιστικό Κέντρο του Δήμου Θερμαϊκού του<br />

Νομού Θεσσαλονίκης.<br />

Antonella Viola<br />

Antonela Viola received her Degree in History at the University of Pisa in 2001. In<br />

2003 she attended the Course –Sustainable development: Sole Alternative for Human<br />

Rights– sponsored by UNICEF at the University of Rome, ‘La Sapienza’ and in<br />

2005 she was a Visiting-Researcher attached to the Economics Department at SOAS<br />

(School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, UK). In 2007-2008<br />

she was Marie Curie Doctoral Fellow at the National and Kapodistrian University of<br />

Athens (Greece), School of Philosophy and History. She received her PhD in 2008<br />

from the European University Institute (EUI); her PhD thesis is entitled ‘Italians in<br />

India, 1860-1920. Trades, Traders and Trading Networks’. She is presently a FCT<br />

Fellow at Centro de Història de Além-Mar (CHAM), FCSH, at the New University of<br />

Lisbon. Among her publications: ‘Italian traders in the 19th century South Asia’, in<br />

Colonialism and Imperialism: between Ideologies and Practices, D. Ramada Curto and A.<br />

Rappas (eds), EUI WORKING PAPERS No. 2006/01; ‘I “mangiatori di spaghetti”: il<br />

Despina Vlami<br />

Despina Vlami is a Researcher in the Research Center for Medieval and Modern<br />

Greek Studies of the Academy of Athens where she is directing the Academy of<br />

Athens program ‘Trade and Diplomacy in Eastern Mediterranean, 17th-19th centuries’.<br />

She has received a B.A. in Political Sciences (Law School, University of Athens)<br />

and a Ph.D. in History and Civilization (European University Institute, Florence).<br />

She is the author of a book on the Greek merchant community in Leghorn,<br />

Tuscany [The Florin, the Grain and Via del Giardino. Greek Merchants in Leghorn<br />

(1750-1868), Themelio Pb., Athens 2000] and an essay on the Levant Company’s<br />

operation in Salonica (British Trade and Diplomacy in Eastern Mediterranean. The Levant<br />

Company in Salonica, 1792-1825, Academy of Athens, Athens 2008). She is currently<br />

working on a main research project concerning the Levant Company’s organization<br />

and operation in the Ottoman Empire in the 18th-19th centuries. She has<br />
