Althoughcharcoal carbonization is similar inprinciple to that of coke, the use ofcoal as a raw material in theproduction and the high temperatureachieved results in a much stronger,denser product, able to withstand theadverse conditions existing in largeblast furnaces.Charcoal, however is an acceptableand successful feed for mini blastfurnaces because the lower height andthe smaller size, and generally loweroutput of the MBF does not put thesame stress on the low and hightemperature strength characteristics ofthe charcoal.Arrangements are also being made toprocure supplies of Colombian coke forpartial substitution in the event ofoperational problems and to provide15% of the fuel source.2.2.5 Mini Sinter Plant TechnologyThe Mini sinter plant is an innovativefacility working on a semi-continuous basisin which individual lots of raw materialsare sintered independently in sinteringpans. The mini sintering plant is availablein a range of capacities related tosintering area. Sinter area ranges from 6 to36 m2 and capacity ranges from 50,000padrões de qualidade acordados,especialmente a respeito dagranulometria e do teor de cinzas.Carvão vegetalA diferencia principal entre MAFs queoperam no Brasil e MAFs em outros paisesé a utilização extensiva de carvãovegetal como a fonte de combustível.Embora a carbonização de carvãovegetal seja, em princípio, similar àquelade coque, este produzido a partir decarvão mineral é um produto muito maisforte e mais denso, capaz de suportar ascondições existentes nos altos-fornosgrandes.O carvão vegetal, porém, é umaalimentação aceitável e de sucesso paramini altos-fornos, porque a altura etamanho menor e, em geral, a produçãomenor do MAF, não impõem o mesmorequerimento quanto às característicasde resistência à altas temperaturas etensão exigidos do coque.Arranjos também estão sendo feitos naprocura de suprimentos de coque daColômbia para suprir 15% da fonte deredutor e para substituição parcial docarvão vegetal em eventuais problemasde suprimento.2.2.5 Mini Sinterização – TecnologiaA planta de mini sinterização é umainstalação inovadora que opera embase semi-contínua, onde lotes dematérias-primas são sinterizadosindependentemente em panelas.
