MMX – Brazilian ProjectsCorumbá Projects A & B – July 6, 2006The decision to choose an EOF steelmaking furnace as the single steel makingunit in the development of a steelmakingplant in Corumbá is one that requiresfurther study. There are only threeoperating units in the world, with oneunder construction in India, and there area limited number of reference plants tofully assess the case for the EOF againstthe choice of a BOF, which is used invirtually every steel making country in theworld, including Brazil.There is, however, much in depthexperience with the technology atDivinópolis in Brazil, where an EOF hasbeen in operation for over 20years. Muchof the development of thetechnology of the EOF has been carriedout at this plant and much of the detailedtechnical knowledge of the process isheld by the suppliers, MiniTec, also basedin Divinópolis.The EOF appears to be ideally suited tothe MMX project in terms of heat size,speed of work, flexibility of scrap melting,which applies equally to the BOF, andlocation close to the site of manufactureand technical expertise.
