Treatment of Parkinson Disease

Commonly used medications for the treatment of PD

are summarized in Table 22–1.

Levodopa. Levodopa (L-DOPA, LARODOPA, L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine),

the metabolic precursor of DA, is

the single most effective agent in the treatment of PD.

Levodopa is itself largely inert; both its therapeutic and

adverse effects result from the decarboxylation of levodopa

to DA. When administered orally, levodopa is

absorbed rapidly from the small bowel by the transport

system for aromatic amino acids. Concentrations of the
