18 Trapping
Misregistration on the printing press may lead to white areas between
touching objects. Trapping tries to compensate for the possibility of misregistration
by printing small areas of overlapping color where objects
meet. These overlaps are created by increasing or reducing individual
color separations (spreads or chokes). See also Fig. 18-2 on page 18-4.
Trapping Entire Layout Automatically
All of the layers on a layout can be trapped automatically when converting
the layout to another format. This is supported for most of the output
formats. Select FILE | EXPORT and use the TRAPPING/SOFT EDGES tab.
For more details refer to Exporting Layouts (page 3-1) and Trapping
(page 3-53).
Automatic trapping applies to all high-resolution layout elements, i.e. all
tint, text and linework layers, except for layers that are soft-edged or
transparent or layer parts located under transparent layers or soft-edged
layers. This exception does not apply to layers with color separations
which are exactly 0% or 100% transparent.
Layers of any type can also be trapped manually when editing a layout.
Trapping Individual Layers Manually
Manually trapping individual layers may be necessary e.g. if you want to
have several trap areas of different sizes on a layout or if a layer cannot
be trapped automatically when converted using FILE | EXPORT.
Proceed as follows:
1. Activate the layers to be trapped (see page 16-1).
2. Select TRAPPING in the MENU window. The TRANSPARENCY, SOFT ED-
GES, TRAPPING dialog appears and the following tab is selected:
