Disse dødsskvadronene som Sherwood hyller her hadde siden 1954, da
militæret tok kontrollen i et CIA sanksjonert kupp, tatt livet av over 60 000
mennesker i Guatemala, og dette fortsatte utover 1980-tallet takket være
amerikansk støtte.

Amerikanske soldater hadde mellom 1853 og 1933 allerede tolv ganger gjort
landhogg i Nicaragua for å intervenere på selskapsinteressenes betingelser, og
da de forlot landet i 1933, etterlot de seg Anastasio Somoza og Nasjonalgarden
hans til å forvalte landet for seg.
Somoza-familien vanstyrte i sin tur landet sammen de amerikanske
selskapsinteressene de neste 43 årene. William Blum forteller om dette: ”While
the Guardsmen, consistently maintained by the United States, passed their
time on martial law, rape, torture, murder of the oppsition, and massacres of
the peasants, as well as violent pursuits such as robbery, extortion, contraband,
running brothels and other government functions, the Somoza clan laid claim
to the lion’s share of Nicaragua’s land and business.” 389
Det er med dette bakteppet i minne vi må se sandinistaenes maktovertagelse i
Nicaragua. Da sandinistaene tok over i 1979, etterlot Somoza seg et land med
en utenlandsgjeld på 1.6 milliarder, hvor over to-tredeler av befolkningen
