Explicit lexical realisations of clausal relations, as opposed to grammatical ones, are not discussed here (e.g. syy epävarmuuteen ’the reason for uncertainty’). 2. In the previous study on the syntax of Finnish children’s literature (Puurtinen 1995) no distinction was made between different types and functions of contracted clauses, and therefore no comparison between each type and the alternative structures with clause connectives is possible.
