For those acquainted with Italian and English literature it is clear that the<br />

twosetsarenotcomparableatall. 3 Whereas the majority of the English texts<br />

could be described as low-brow or popular literature, the Italian texts are<br />

almost all classics, canonical exemplars from the production of high-brow<br />

authors. This is not, we would suggest, an effect of the text-selection procedure<br />

(random sampling ensures that no human bias was inserted at this stage), but<br />

a distinguishing feature of translation policies in the two cultures.<br />

Let us now consider a monolingual comparable corpus, namely the pioneering<br />

<strong>Translation</strong>al English Corpus (TEC) developed at UMIST, in particular<br />
