33. Economics and Organization <strong>of</strong> Industrial Production Institute in<br />

Akademgorodok was established in 1958 as <strong>the</strong> first <strong>Academy</strong>-level economics<br />

institute east <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Urals.<br />

Granberg, Aleksandr G., D. Econ. S. Born in 1936. Specialist in planning for <strong>the</strong><br />

national economy and <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> modeling <strong>of</strong> economic research.<br />

Academician <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Economics Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1992. He<br />

graduated from <strong>the</strong> Moscow State <strong>University</strong> in 1960 and began working at <strong>the</strong><br />

Computer Center <strong>of</strong> GOSPLAN, and at <strong>the</strong> Moscow Institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> National<br />

Economy. From 1963 <strong>to</strong> 1969, he was at <strong>the</strong> Novosibirsk State <strong>University</strong>, and<br />

from 1965 he has held <strong>the</strong> chair on applied ma<strong>the</strong>matical methods for economic<br />

planning. In 1969, he joined <strong>the</strong> Economy and Organization <strong>of</strong> Industrial<br />

Production Institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department, heading <strong>the</strong> sec<strong>to</strong>r on economicma<strong>the</strong>matical<br />

modeling and methods <strong>of</strong> optimizing terri<strong>to</strong>rial planning, becoming its<br />

Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r in 1975 and its Direc<strong>to</strong>r in 1985. He has been on <strong>the</strong> Siberian<br />

Presidium since 1986. He has been head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scientific Council <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong><br />

on <strong>the</strong> Economic <strong>Sciences</strong> since 1985. In 1988, he became Chief edi<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

journal Economics and <strong>the</strong> Organization <strong>of</strong> Industrial Production. He received <strong>the</strong><br />

Lenin Komsomol Prize in 1968. In <strong>the</strong> early 1990s <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department<br />

established <strong>the</strong> Siberian International Center for Regional Studies in Novosibirsk<br />

that had as its Scientific Research Direc<strong>to</strong>r Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Granberg. The Center’s base<br />

institution is <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Economics and Industrial Engineering <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian<br />

Department in Akademgorodok-Novosibirsk <strong>of</strong> which Dr. Granberg is also <strong>the</strong><br />

Science Direc<strong>to</strong>r. In <strong>the</strong> process <strong>of</strong> being organized at present, <strong>the</strong> center will<br />

involve <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department, <strong>the</strong> International Regional Science Association and<br />

Geographic Union will be its founders and its activities will involve research<br />

groups from universities and research centers from <strong>the</strong> United States, Germany,<br />

Canada, Sweden, Israel, Hungary in research in<strong>to</strong> regional economics.<br />

In 1967, <strong>the</strong> labora<strong>to</strong>ry on <strong>the</strong> application <strong>of</strong> statistical and ma<strong>the</strong>matical methods in <strong>the</strong><br />

economy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department was merged with this institute. Its first<br />

Direc<strong>to</strong>r was G. A. Prudenskii (1958-66). A. G. Aganbegian was its Direc<strong>to</strong>r from<br />

1967 until 1984, and from 1985 <strong>to</strong> 1991 it was headed up by A. G. Granberg, a<br />

corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong>. The current Direc<strong>to</strong>r<br />
