Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> RAN.<br />

The institute researches au<strong>to</strong>mated control systems, <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>the</strong>matics <strong>of</strong> physics and<br />

chemistry, and develops s<strong>of</strong>tware. Its scientists model problems <strong>of</strong> plasma physics,<br />

and chemical kinetics. In 1992, <strong>the</strong> staff <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Computer Center <strong>to</strong>taled 302 people<br />

<strong>of</strong> whom 141 were research scientists and <strong>of</strong> whom seven held <strong>the</strong> doc<strong>to</strong>rate and 53<br />

<strong>the</strong> candidate degree. Iurii I. Shokin, D. PM. S. has headed <strong>the</strong> center since 1984.<br />

Khol’kin (Kholkin), Ana<strong>to</strong>lii I., D. Chem. S. Born in 1937. Inorganic chemist.<br />

Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Physical Chemistry and Technology <strong>of</strong> Inorganic<br />

Materials Department and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since<br />

December 1987. He graduated from <strong>the</strong> Leningrad Polytechnic Institute in 1960.<br />

From 1962 <strong>to</strong> 1980, he researched in <strong>the</strong> Inorganic Chemistry Institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Siberian Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> academy, moving from an aspirant, a junior and senior<br />

researcher. In 1980, he joined <strong>the</strong> Chemistry and Chemical Technology Institue <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Siberian Department, as its Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r and in 1981, he became Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong><br />

that institute. Since 1982, he has been a pr<strong>of</strong>essor at <strong>the</strong> Krasnoyarsk State<br />

<strong>University</strong>, holding <strong>the</strong> chair <strong>of</strong> inorganic and organic chemistry. He is a leading<br />

member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scientific Coordinating Council. He received <strong>the</strong> State<br />

Laureate Prize in 1986. (LDA 89-11378.)<br />

The Chemistry and Chemical Technology Institute in Krasnoyarsk was founded in 1981<br />

from <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Chemistry and Chemical Technology <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong><br />

Inorganic Chemistry in Novosibirsk. The institute studies new chemicalmetallurgical<br />

processes for <strong>the</strong> extraction <strong>of</strong> non-ferrous metals from ores, <strong>the</strong><br />

transformation <strong>of</strong> brown coals <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dansk-Achinsk field with <strong>the</strong> aim <strong>of</strong> creating a<br />

basis for new technologies for conversion in<strong>to</strong> syn<strong>the</strong>tic fuels and chemical<br />
