Physics and Astronomy Department for <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> developing computer<br />

hardware and s<strong>of</strong>tware, concentrating on high speed computers. His works have<br />

included <strong>the</strong> principles and methods <strong>of</strong> building digital computers, <strong>the</strong>oretical and<br />

practical problems <strong>of</strong> au<strong>to</strong>matic control, and <strong>the</strong> principles <strong>of</strong> implementing multiprocessing<br />

Velikhov, Evgenii P., D. PM. S. Born in 1935 in Moscow. <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>the</strong>oretical<br />

physicist. Since 1974, he has been an academician <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General Physics and<br />

Astronomy Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> and since 1984, he has acted as<br />

academician secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Information Science, Computer Technology, and<br />

Au<strong>to</strong>mation Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>. He graduated from Moscow State<br />

<strong>University</strong> in 1958 and began working in <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> A<strong>to</strong>mic Energy at once<br />

becoming head <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> its Departments in 1962. He has been a pr<strong>of</strong>essor at<br />

Moscow State <strong>University</strong> since 1968. From 1971 <strong>to</strong> 1988, he served as deputy<br />

direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> I. V. Kurcha<strong>to</strong>v A<strong>to</strong>mic Energy Institute in Moscow. In December <strong>of</strong><br />

1988, he was named direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> this important institute that was created in 1943 <strong>to</strong><br />

develop nuclear weapons. It is <strong>the</strong> largest institute in Russia that concentrates on<br />

nuclear research that includes all aspects <strong>of</strong> a<strong>to</strong>mic energy, including plasma and<br />

solid state physics, fission and fusion reac<strong>to</strong>rs, and lasers. The institute is directly<br />

subordinate <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> State Committee for Utilization <strong>of</strong> A<strong>to</strong>mic Energy. Since 1977,<br />

he has served as Vice President for <strong>the</strong> Physical and Ma<strong>the</strong>matical <strong>Sciences</strong> Section<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> academy. Since 1978, he has headed <strong>the</strong> Geophysical labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> High<br />

Temperatures Institute in Moscow. Since 1978, he has served as a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Board <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> general assembly <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> GKNT. Since 1984, he has been deputy<br />

direc<strong>to</strong>r for science <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Industrial Lasers Scientific Research Center in Troitsk<br />

that is under <strong>the</strong> U.S.S.R. <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong>. The center is comprised <strong>of</strong><br />

scientific research divisions, a design bureau, and an experimental production<br />

facility that develops and introduces laser <strong>to</strong>ols and methods in<strong>to</strong> industry. His<br />

works are in low-temperature physics, plasma and magnetic hydrodynamics.<br />

Current member <strong>of</strong> Edi<strong>to</strong>rial board <strong>of</strong> Science in <strong>the</strong> U.S.S.R. Since 1986, he has<br />

been a Candidate Member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Central Committee <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> CPSU. In 1986, he was<br />

<strong>the</strong> recipient <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> M. D. Millionshchikov Prize in a<strong>to</strong>mic power engineering.<br />

Guliaev, Iurii V., D. PM. S. Born in 1935. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General<br />

Physics and Astronomy Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> academy since 1979, and academician <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Information Science, Computer Technology, and Au<strong>to</strong>mation Department since<br />

1984. From 1972 <strong>to</strong> 1988, he was deputy direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Radio Engineering and<br />

Electronics Institute in Moscow that does basic research in radio wave propagation,<br />

new electronic devices for detection, generation, and amplification <strong>of</strong> radio signals.<br />

In 1988, he was named Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Radio Engineering and Electronics Institute<br />

in Moscow. In 1988, he was also named Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sara<strong>to</strong>v Scientific Center<br />

under <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR and continues in that position under <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Sciences</strong>.<br />
