enough about <strong>the</strong> educational background <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 30 corresponding members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

His<strong>to</strong>ry Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> is known <strong>to</strong> produce<br />

meaningful generalizations. Again, three graduated from Moscow State <strong>University</strong>,<br />

one from Leningrad State <strong>University</strong>, one from <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> Social sciences ,<br />

one from <strong>the</strong> Higher Diplomatic School <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ministry <strong>of</strong> Foreign Affairs, and one<br />

from <strong>the</strong> Dnepropetrovsk Pedagogical Institute. A fairly large number <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> rest <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> corresponding members hold advanced degrees but <strong>the</strong>ir institutions <strong>of</strong><br />

graduation are not known. Again, <strong>the</strong> diversity <strong>of</strong> institutions from which <strong>Russian</strong><br />

scientists graduate is impressive. While Moscow State <strong>University</strong> and Leningrad<br />

State <strong>University</strong> are important institutions, <strong>Russian</strong> scientists have attended<br />

universities all over <strong>the</strong> country--it is after graduation that <strong>the</strong>y receive <strong>the</strong>ir advanced<br />

degrees in <strong>the</strong> various research institutes.<br />
