include academician Stanislav S. Shatalin,<br />

(Shatalin, Stanislav S., C. Econ. S. Born in 1934 in Pushkin, Leningrad<br />

Oblast. <strong>Russian</strong> economist. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Economics<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1974, and academician, 1987. He<br />

graduated from <strong>the</strong> economics Department <strong>of</strong> Moscow State<br />

<strong>University</strong> in 1958. From 1959 <strong>to</strong> 1965, he was a research worker<br />

and head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> intersec<strong>to</strong>r balance section <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> SRI <strong>of</strong> Economics<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> State Planning Committee <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> U.S.S.R. (GOSPLAN).<br />

From 1965 <strong>to</strong> 1976, he was a Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Central<br />

Economic Ma<strong>the</strong>matical Institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR and in 1976 he<br />

became Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Systems Research Scientific Research<br />

Institute in Moscow and in 1977, Department head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> All-Union<br />

SRI <strong>of</strong> Systems Research for <strong>the</strong> State Committee for Science and<br />

Technology (GKNT) and for <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR. He also became <strong>the</strong> head<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> subdepartment <strong>of</strong> ma<strong>the</strong>matical methods <strong>of</strong> economic analysis<br />

in <strong>the</strong> economics Department at Moscow State <strong>University</strong>. His<br />

primary work is in constructing ma<strong>the</strong>matical economic models and<br />

in national economic planning. In 1985, he joined <strong>the</strong> staff <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

newly organized Economics and Forecasting <strong>of</strong> Scientific-Technical<br />

Progress Institute in Moscow. Recipient <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> State Prize, 1968. In<br />

1987, he received <strong>the</strong> V. S. Nemchinov Prize for economics and<br />

statistics. He is presently <strong>the</strong> Academician Secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Economics Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> and is<br />

head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Economic Forecasting in Moscow.(GSE 29,<br />

The main goal <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute is short, medium, and long term forecasting<br />

<strong>of</strong> economic and social development <strong>of</strong> Russia. The main areas <strong>of</strong> research<br />

at <strong>the</strong> Institute are:<br />

<strong>the</strong> dynamics and structure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> national economy;<br />

fac<strong>to</strong>rs and resources effecting potential for economic development;<br />

structural and technological processes in economic systems;<br />

development <strong>of</strong> various branches <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> economy as a whole as<br />

well as its industrial complexes;<br />

conversion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> military sec<strong>to</strong>r;<br />

economic and social development <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> regions <strong>of</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> Federations,<br />

federal and regional policy, economic ties with o<strong>the</strong>r CIS countries;<br />

management <strong>of</strong> state property, privatization and o<strong>the</strong>r institutional<br />

problems;<br />
