The VVER Division <strong>of</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Nuclear Reac<strong>to</strong>r (NRI) specializes in pressurized water<br />

reac<strong>to</strong>r engineering.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>the</strong> first Soviet nuclear reac<strong>to</strong>rs have been developed, <strong>the</strong> progress in<br />

nuclear power and nuclear reac<strong>to</strong>rs for special purposes has commenced,<br />

fundamentals <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nuclear reac<strong>to</strong>r physics as a branch <strong>of</strong> science have been<br />

assumed as a basis. The Institute solves complex scientific and engineering<br />

problems, providing realization <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> state politics and creation <strong>of</strong> a scientific basis<br />

in <strong>the</strong> sphere <strong>of</strong> nuclear power progress, development and mastering <strong>of</strong> effective,<br />

safe and ecologically clean energy sources based on nuclear fission reactions.<br />

The main directions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> VVER Division activity:<br />

development <strong>of</strong> concepts <strong>of</strong> nuclear power progress;<br />

development <strong>of</strong> scientific and technical fundamentals <strong>of</strong> reac<strong>to</strong>r engineering and nuclear<br />

power, carrying out fundamental and search investigations in this field, primarily-concerning<br />

safety problems;<br />

<strong>the</strong> scientific leadership by development, construction and operation <strong>of</strong> nuclear power<br />

plants (NPP);<br />

improvement, enhancement <strong>of</strong> reliability and safety <strong>of</strong> operating reac<strong>to</strong>r plants and NPP;<br />

<strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> effective and safe reac<strong>to</strong>r plants and NPP based on new ideas,<br />

technologies and technical decisions.<br />

Under <strong>the</strong> scientific auspices <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> VVER Division <strong>the</strong>re have been created and are<br />

operated <strong>the</strong> reac<strong>to</strong>r plants VVER-440 and VVER-1000 for NPP, projects have<br />

been developed and are realized for reac<strong>to</strong>r plants for AST, low power reac<strong>to</strong>r plant<br />

series, etc.<br />

Projects <strong>of</strong> new generation power reac<strong>to</strong>rs based on traditional technologies but ensuring<br />

<strong>the</strong> ultimate permissible safety level are being developed. Projects <strong>of</strong> advanced,<br />

based on new ideas, reac<strong>to</strong>r plants are being developed in which <strong>the</strong> selfprotection<br />

principles are realized, passive safety means are ensured.<br />

The VVER Division is <strong>the</strong> crew <strong>of</strong> specialists, scientists, engineers-investiga<strong>to</strong>rs,<br />

programmers, designers, technicians and workers, having:<br />

specialized fund (bank) <strong>of</strong> algorithms and programs and data base in <strong>the</strong> reac<strong>to</strong>r physics,<br />

radiation transfer, radiation protection (OFAP-NR), with a number <strong>of</strong> codes fully<br />

qualified by Gosa<strong>to</strong>mtekhnadzor;<br />

advanced experimental base making it possible <strong>to</strong> carry out investigations on physics <strong>of</strong><br />

various types <strong>of</strong> reac<strong>to</strong>rs, <strong>the</strong>rmal physics, hydraulics, gas dynamics, special<br />

investigations on safety problems, etc.;<br />

design <strong>of</strong>fice and pilot-scale production with wide potentialities.<br />

The Division performs a wide international cooperation with leading firms and institutes <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> West Europe and USA. Traditional cooperation with East Europe and Asia<br />

countries is preserved. Along with solution <strong>of</strong> its main problems<br />
