Turkmen SSR. <strong>Russian</strong> organic chemist. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General<br />

and Technical Chemistry Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> since<br />

1968, and academician since 1974. Deputy-principal secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Presidium <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> academy since 1971. He graduated from <strong>the</strong> Military <strong>Academy</strong> for Protection<br />

Against Chemical Attack in 1935. Worked as an engineer in <strong>the</strong> chemical industry<br />

until WWII. From 1941 <strong>to</strong> 1947 he served in <strong>the</strong> Red Army. In 1947, he worked at<br />

<strong>the</strong> military academy from which he had graduated with an advanced degree in<br />

1939, and he headed a subdepartment <strong>the</strong>re from 1959 <strong>to</strong> 1970. In 1974, he became<br />

Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> a major labora<strong>to</strong>ry at <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Physical Chemistry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN<br />

SSSR in Moscow. Since 1981, he has served as Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> A. N. Neimeianov<br />

Elemen<strong>to</strong>organic Compounds Institute in Moscow that is subordinate <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> General<br />

and Technical Chemistry Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> academy. It was established in 1955<br />

and does research on hetero-organic compounds, polymers, and <strong>the</strong> organic<br />

chemistry <strong>of</strong> iso<strong>to</strong>pes. His work has involved syn<strong>the</strong>sizing ethylene oxide and<br />

propylene oxide through <strong>the</strong> direct oxidation <strong>of</strong> olefins by atmospheric oxygen. He<br />

has investigated esters <strong>of</strong> cyan<strong>of</strong>ormic acid and <strong>the</strong> production <strong>of</strong> transformer oils<br />

by <strong>the</strong> chlorination <strong>of</strong> biphenyl. He is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> developers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> current method<br />

for concentrating and preserving fragments <strong>of</strong> radioactive iso<strong>to</strong>pes. He has been<br />

Academician Secretary since 1985. In 1988, he was appointed an advisor <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
