[Kuz’min (Kuzmin), Mikhail I., D. GM. S. Born in 1938. Geochemist. Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Geochemistry Institute imen A. V. Vinogradov. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry, and Mining <strong>Sciences</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Academy</strong> and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department since 1990. He is <strong>the</strong> author <strong>of</strong> 11<br />

scientific works <strong>of</strong> which one is a monograph <strong>of</strong> importance. He has co-authored<br />

140 pieces <strong>of</strong> which eight are lengthy monographs <strong>of</strong> which two bear mentioning:<br />

“New Global Tec<strong>to</strong>nics, Magmatism and Metallogeny” (1976) and “The Tech<strong>to</strong>nics<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lithosphere’s Plate in <strong>the</strong> Terri<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Soviet Union” (1990.) In his research<br />

he has conducted comparative studies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> geochemistry <strong>of</strong> magmatic<br />

ocean rocks. He has headed expeditions for collecting samples for study from <strong>the</strong><br />

Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans. He is a member <strong>of</strong> a working group on<br />

“Paleoreconstruction.” He is also on <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> Committee on <strong>the</strong> “Lithosphere”<br />

program and <strong>the</strong> program on “Geodynamics, ” and o<strong>the</strong>rs. (LDA 89-11378.)]<br />

The institute was established in 1958 by A. P. Vinogradov who was its founding Direc<strong>to</strong>r.<br />

From 1960 <strong>to</strong> 1989, <strong>the</strong> institute was headed by Academician L. V. Tauson. Since<br />

1989 it has been headed by Dr. M. I. Kuz'min. In 1992, institute personnel <strong>to</strong>taled<br />

362 persons <strong>of</strong> whom 115 were research scientists and <strong>of</strong> whom 15 held <strong>the</strong><br />

doc<strong>to</strong>rate and 63 <strong>the</strong> candidate degree. Institute scientists research in <strong>the</strong> physical<br />

ma<strong>the</strong>matical modeling <strong>of</strong> geochemical processes and <strong>the</strong> institute manufactures<br />

helium for use in cryogenic research. The institute is comprised <strong>of</strong> two departments:<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> Applied Geochemistry headed by Dr. Pavel V. Koval;<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> Single Crystals Physics headed by Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Aleksandr I.<br />

Nepomnyaschikh; an X-Ray Analysis Group chaired by G. G. Afonina, and a<br />

Computer Processing Group that processes geochemical data and is headed by<br />

Valerii I. Lozhkin.<br />

Research is conducted in eleven labora<strong>to</strong>ries:<br />

(5.) Experimental Geochemistry Labora<strong>to</strong>ry: Aleksandr I. Almukhamedov;<br />
