<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Kazan', one. All academicians, however have advanced degrees.<br />

Corresponding Members--ages and schools: Only ten birth dates <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 26<br />

corresponding members is known. There are a disproportionate number <strong>of</strong><br />

members in <strong>the</strong>ir 80s who are members <strong>of</strong> this department--a <strong>to</strong>tal <strong>of</strong> six in all. Of<br />

<strong>the</strong> four o<strong>the</strong>r with known birth dates <strong>the</strong> average age in 1991 was 60 years. Seven<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 26 corresponding members held joint memberships with six different subjectmatter<br />

departments <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong>. Seventeen <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m were<br />

or had been Direc<strong>to</strong>rs or Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>of</strong> research institutes subordinate <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Urals Department. Five institutions are known <strong>to</strong> have graduated at least five <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

corresponding members. These include: <strong>the</strong> S. M. Kirov Urals Polytechnic<br />

Institute, two; <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Kazan', one; <strong>the</strong> Sverdlovsk Institute <strong>of</strong> Geological<br />

Prospecting, one, and <strong>the</strong> Leningrad State <strong>University</strong>, one.<br />

Chairman:<br />

Mesiats, Gennadii A., D. PM. S. Born in 1936. Physicist. He has been an<br />

academician <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General Physics and Astronomy Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR<br />

and <strong>the</strong> RAS since 1984. He is also a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Urals Department. Since<br />

1986, he has served as a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Presidium <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> USSR Since 1977, he has been a co-Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> High Current Electronics<br />

Institute in Tomsk, an affiliate <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> academy's Siberian Department that researches<br />

<strong>the</strong>rmonuclear and accelera<strong>to</strong>r physics and laser technology and that was created in<br />

1977 from <strong>the</strong> High Current Electronics Labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Atmospheric Optics<br />

Institute. Since 1986 he has been Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Urals Center (now Department),<br />

and since November <strong>of</strong> 1986, he has served as <strong>the</strong> Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Electrophysics<br />

Institute in Ekaterinburg (Sverdlovsk) that was established in 1986. In Oc<strong>to</strong>ber<br />

1987 he was named a Vice President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR for <strong>the</strong> Urals Department<br />

and continues in that position with <strong>the</strong> revitalized <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong>.<br />

First Deputy Chairman:<br />

Tolstikov, Genrikh A., D. Chem S. Born in 1933. Academician <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General and<br />

Technical Chemistry Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR from 1987, and first Deputy<br />

Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Urals Department since 1988. Since 1977, he has been Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Chemistry Institute in Ufa. Established in 1960, it studies <strong>the</strong> methods <strong>of</strong><br />

processing sulfur crudes in<strong>to</strong> fuels. He was named Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bashkir<br />

Affiliate in 1984.<br />

Deputy Chairmen:<br />

Chichkanov, Valerii P., D. Econ. S. <strong>Russian</strong> economist. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Economics Department and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Urals Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since<br />

1981. From 1980 <strong>to</strong> 1987, he was Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Economics Study Institute at<br />

Khabarovsk under <strong>the</strong> Far Eastern Department that studied <strong>the</strong> economic<br />

development <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> Far East. In 1987, he was made Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Economics Institute in Ekatarinburg which sprang from a research group organized<br />

in 1941, <strong>to</strong> become a Department <strong>of</strong> Economic Studies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Urals Branch <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Academy</strong> in 1951, and in 1971 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Urals Department. In 1971, <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong><br />

Economics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Urals Department was reorganized. Its scientists in <strong>the</strong> past have<br />

worked closely with <strong>the</strong> State Planning Committee. The Institute studies methods <strong>of</strong><br />

improving production efficiency in <strong>the</strong> Urals region. Special attention is given <strong>to</strong><br />

energy production, capital investment policies and <strong>the</strong> introduction <strong>of</strong> new<br />

technologies in<strong>to</strong> production. (LDA 89-11378.)<br />

Koroteev, Vik<strong>to</strong>r A., C. GM. S. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Geology,<br />

Geochemistry, Geophysics and Mining <strong>Sciences</strong> Department and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Urals<br />

Department since 1987; academician since 1993. Since 1975, he has been Direc<strong>to</strong>r<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> V. I. Lenin Ilmenskii State Reserve in Miass in Cheliabinsk (Chelyabinsk)<br />
