Nikonov, Aleksandr A. Born in 1918. From 1979 <strong>to</strong> 1984, he was <strong>the</strong> Academician<br />

Secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Economics and Management <strong>of</strong> Agricultural Production Department<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> V. I. Lenin <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> Agricultural sciences . He has been an academician<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Economics Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> RAS since 1984. Since 1984, he has served as<br />

President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> V. I. Lenin <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> Agricultural sciences that was founded in<br />

1929 and is <strong>the</strong> highest scientific institution in Russia in <strong>the</strong> fields <strong>of</strong> agriculture, water<br />

resource management, and forestry.<br />

Petrakov, Nikolai Ia. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Economics Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Academy</strong> since 1984; academician in 1993. Since 1973, he has been a Deputy<br />

Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Central Economic and Ma<strong>the</strong>matics Institute in Moscow. The<br />

institute engages in contemporary ma<strong>the</strong>matical economic work and has a major<br />

responsibility for developing national economic and industrial plans. In late 1990,<br />

he was named Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> a new institute--<strong>the</strong> Market Problems Institute in Moscow.<br />

This institute was organized in late 1990 from a number <strong>of</strong> units transferred from <strong>the</strong><br />

Central Economic-Ma<strong>the</strong>matical Institute for <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> improving <strong>the</strong> national<br />

economic mechanism. Its staff consists <strong>of</strong> 170 researchers <strong>of</strong> whom 15 hold<br />

doc<strong>to</strong>ral degrees and 25 hold candidate degrees. There are two academicians <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> on its staff. In <strong>the</strong> 1990s researchers in <strong>the</strong> institute will work on<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory and methodology <strong>of</strong> organizing markets in a socialist economy; problems<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> effective use <strong>of</strong> economic levers within <strong>the</strong> system <strong>of</strong> economic management;<br />

<strong>the</strong> patterns <strong>of</strong> functioning and <strong>the</strong> evolution <strong>of</strong> market structures and mechanisms-<strong>the</strong><br />

forming <strong>of</strong> a system <strong>of</strong> control <strong>of</strong> market processes--and <strong>the</strong> modeling <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

interaction and integration processes between <strong>the</strong> internal and world markets. The<br />

institute has established ties with scientific and research units in universities in <strong>the</strong><br />

United States, Great Britain, France, Italy, Sweden, Iapan, Finland, South Korea,<br />

Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary and o<strong>the</strong>r countries.<br />

Shatalin, Stanislav S., C. Econ. S. Born in 1934 in Pushkin, Leningrad Oblast.<br />

<strong>Russian</strong> economist. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Economics Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Academy</strong> since 1974, and academician, 1987. He graduated from <strong>the</strong> economics<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> Moscow State <strong>University</strong> in 1958. From 1959 <strong>to</strong> 1965, he was a<br />

research worker and Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> intersec<strong>to</strong>r balance section <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> SRI <strong>of</strong> Economics<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> State Planning Committee <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> USSR (GOSPLAN). From 1965 <strong>to</strong> 1976,<br />

he was a Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Central Economic Ma<strong>the</strong>matical Institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN<br />

SSSR and in 1976 he became Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Systems Research Scientific<br />

Research Institute in Moscow and in 1977, Department Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> All-Union SRI<br />

<strong>of</strong> Systems Research for <strong>the</strong> State Committee for Science and Technology (GKNT)<br />

and for <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR. He also became <strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> subdepartment <strong>of</strong><br />

ma<strong>the</strong>matical methods <strong>of</strong> economic analysis in <strong>the</strong> economics Department at Moscow<br />

State <strong>University</strong>. His primary work is in constructing ma<strong>the</strong>matical economic<br />

models and in national economic planning. In 1985, he joined <strong>the</strong> staff <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> newly<br />

organized Economics and Forecasting <strong>of</strong> Scientific-Technical Progress Institute in<br />

Moscow. Recipient <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> State Prize, 1968. In 1987, he received <strong>the</strong> V. S.<br />

Nemchinov Prize for economics and statistics. (GSE 29, p. 546.)<br />

Sitarian, Stefan A. D. Econ. S. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Economics Department<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1984; academician since 1987.<br />

Yaremenko, Iurii V. Born in 1935. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Economics<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1987; academician in 1993. Since 1988, he has<br />

been <strong>the</strong> Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Economics and Forecasting <strong>of</strong> Scientific-Technical Progress<br />

Institute in Moscow which was established in 1985 and which has some 15<br />

labora<strong>to</strong>ries: Methods and Models <strong>of</strong> Medium and Short-Term Forecasting<br />

Labora<strong>to</strong>ry; <strong>the</strong> Organization and Methodological Provision <strong>of</strong> Complex<br />
