Informational Materials Department; (2.) <strong>the</strong> Scientific Holdings Department; (3.) <strong>the</strong><br />

Scientific-informational Services Department; (4.) <strong>the</strong> Acquisition <strong>of</strong> Scientific<br />

Holdings Department with sec<strong>to</strong>rs on coordination <strong>of</strong> foreign literature purchases,<br />

acquisition <strong>of</strong> foreign literature, acquisition <strong>of</strong> Soviet literature, international book<br />

exchange, and au<strong>to</strong>mating acquisition and input processes; (5.) <strong>the</strong> Dissemination <strong>of</strong><br />

Informational Materials Department; (6.) a Labora<strong>to</strong>ry on Problems <strong>of</strong><br />

Bibliographical Description and Compilation <strong>of</strong> Alphabetic Catalogs; and (7.) a<br />

4. Industrial Lasers Scientific Research Center in Troitsk. Established in 1979.<br />

The center has scientific research divisions, a design bureau, and an experimental<br />

production facility. It is an experimental facility for <strong>the</strong> restructuring <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

organization <strong>of</strong> scientific and technological enterprises in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> Federation<br />

with <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> introducing scientific and technological discoveries more quickly in<strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> production <strong>of</strong> goods. Its production base is located in Shatura. This base was<br />

established in 1985.<br />

5. Numerical Ma<strong>the</strong>matics Institute in Moscow--(Formerly--<strong>the</strong> Computational<br />

Ma<strong>the</strong>matics Institute in Moscow). headed by <strong>the</strong> former President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> Gurii I. Marchuk.<br />

6. A Computational Ma<strong>the</strong>matics Institute was created in 1980 and it was given full<br />

institute status in 1991 by <strong>the</strong> Presidium <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong><br />

(RAS). Its Direc<strong>to</strong>r, Gurii I. Marchuk, D. PM S., after serving as Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

GKNT, became president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Soviet <strong>Academy</strong> in 1986, a position he held until<br />

1991. The institute conducts research in applied ma<strong>the</strong>matics, long-range<br />

forecasting, <strong>the</strong> formulation <strong>of</strong> ma<strong>the</strong>matical models, and in <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong><br />

computational methodology. Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Marchuk continues <strong>to</strong> be <strong>the</strong> Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

institute. Initially, this Institute was directly subordinate <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Presidium. It is now<br />

located under <strong>the</strong> Ma<strong>the</strong>matics Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>, and bears <strong>the</strong><br />

title <strong>of</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Computing Ma<strong>the</strong>matics. It is located at 32a, Leninskii Avenue.,<br />

Moscow, 117993, and it is directed by Gurii Iv. Marchuk, tel. 938-17-69.<br />

7. Nuclear Safety Institute in Moscow was established in 1988, <strong>the</strong> institute has<br />

remained subordinate <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Presidium <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> itself. Scientists<br />

at <strong>the</strong> institute study <strong>the</strong> methodology <strong>of</strong> programming for <strong>the</strong> safety <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nuclear<br />

complexes in Russia and <strong>the</strong> problems <strong>of</strong> safety <strong>of</strong> a<strong>to</strong>mic energy, <strong>the</strong> ecological<br />

problems resulting from <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> a<strong>to</strong>mic energy, and <strong>the</strong> disposal <strong>of</strong> nuclear waste.<br />
