The institute has a staff <strong>of</strong> 43 researchers <strong>of</strong> whom five hold <strong>the</strong> doc<strong>to</strong>ral and 21 hold <strong>the</strong><br />

candidate degree. One corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> Sciencies<br />

is on <strong>the</strong> staff. The institute has established relations with <strong>the</strong> Atlantic Council <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

United States, <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> East-West Security Problems at Stanford <strong>University</strong>;<br />

<strong>the</strong> School <strong>of</strong> Advanced International Studies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Iohns Hopkins <strong>University</strong>, <strong>the</strong><br />

British <strong>Academy</strong>; <strong>the</strong> Royal Institute <strong>of</strong> International Affairs, <strong>the</strong> International<br />

Institute for Strategic Studies; <strong>the</strong> Royal College <strong>of</strong> Great Britain, <strong>the</strong> Aspen<br />

Institute; <strong>the</strong> Economic Research Institute and European <strong>Academy</strong>; <strong>the</strong> Research<br />

9. World Institute in Moscow. (Formerly Peace Institute)<br />

89, fax: 310-70-27. Directed by Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Aleksandr K. Kislov.<br />

Retrospect: This institute was founded in 1990 from <strong>the</strong> Scientific Council for <strong>the</strong> Study<br />

<strong>of</strong> Problems <strong>of</strong> Peace and Disarmament that had been established in 1979. It is under<br />

<strong>the</strong> Direc<strong>to</strong>rship <strong>of</strong> Dr. Aleksandr K. Kislov, D. Hist. S. The institute has three<br />

major sponsors: <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR, <strong>the</strong> GKNT, and <strong>the</strong> Soviet Peace Committee. It is<br />

not organized in any traditional way and maintains a very small staff, in 1992<br />

consisting <strong>of</strong> seven researchers, <strong>of</strong> whom three held doc<strong>to</strong>ral and three held candidate<br />

degrees. Its staff is working on problems <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> conversion <strong>of</strong> military<br />

production <strong>to</strong> civilian production, <strong>the</strong> problems <strong>of</strong> an international security system,<br />

peace and disarmament, and o<strong>the</strong>r such matters. The institute has established relations<br />

with <strong>the</strong> Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute and <strong>the</strong> Center for Marine<br />

Policy in <strong>the</strong> USA, with <strong>the</strong> Transnational Foundation for Research <strong>of</strong> Peace<br />

Problems and <strong>the</strong> Future (Sweden), and <strong>the</strong> Pacific Institute for <strong>the</strong> Study <strong>of</strong><br />
