Savin, Gennadii I. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Informatics,<br />

Computer Equipment and Au<strong>to</strong>matization (DICEA) <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> in<br />

1993. He is responsible for <strong>the</strong> scientific organization <strong>of</strong> research activities in <strong>the</strong><br />

institutes subordinate <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department.<br />

Alekseev, Ana<strong>to</strong>lii S., D. PM. S. Born in 1928 in Pskov Oblast. <strong>Russian</strong><br />

geophysicist. He was elected a corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> academy in 1972 and<br />

an academician in 1984. Since 1984, he has been an academician <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Information<br />

<strong>Sciences</strong>, Computer Technology and Au<strong>to</strong>mation Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> National<br />

<strong>Academy</strong> and also <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department. He graduated from Leningrad State<br />

<strong>University</strong> in 1952. From 1955 <strong>to</strong> 1963, he was on <strong>the</strong> staff <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> St. Petersburg<br />

Division <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> V. A. Steklov Institute <strong>of</strong> Ma<strong>the</strong>matics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR and <strong>the</strong><br />

RAN. In 1963, he joined <strong>the</strong> Computer Center <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department,<br />

becoming Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> center in 1980. He joined <strong>the</strong> Presidium <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Siberian Department in 1980. In 1964, he taught at <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Novosibirsk,<br />

becoming a pr<strong>of</strong>essor in 1970. Since 1980, he has been on <strong>the</strong> Presidium <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Siberian DSepartment. He Developed principles for geological data ga<strong>the</strong>ring from<br />

vibration sounding <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earth's interior. His major work has been in seismology.<br />

He has headed <strong>the</strong> Scientific Society for <strong>the</strong> Mechanical Ma<strong>the</strong>matical <strong>Sciences</strong> in<br />

Energetics, <strong>the</strong> Coordination <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Soviet Scientific Committee on <strong>the</strong> Earth’s<br />

Vibration Processes, <strong>the</strong> Soviet Committee for Methods <strong>of</strong> Distance Finding, <strong>the</strong><br />

Committee for Computing Technology, and <strong>the</strong> regional section <strong>of</strong> Siberia and <strong>the</strong><br />

Far Eastern Scientific Service for Modeling Complex Ma<strong>the</strong>matical Problems. Since<br />

1976, he has been a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> American Ma<strong>the</strong>matical Society, and since 1981<br />

a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> American Pho<strong>to</strong>grammetry Association, and since 1983 he has<br />

been a specialist (consultant) on sources <strong>of</strong> seismic control. In 1982, he received a<br />

State Prize and is <strong>the</strong> holder <strong>of</strong> a number <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r medals recognizing his<br />

Bunkin, Boris V., D. Tech. S. Born in July 1922 in <strong>the</strong> village <strong>of</strong> Aksinino, Moscow<br />

Oblast. He has been a corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General Physics and<br />

Astronomy Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1968; an academician since 1974. He<br />

graduated from <strong>the</strong> Moscow Aviation Institute in 1947 going <strong>to</strong> work on <strong>the</strong> staff<br />

<strong>the</strong>re immediately. Since 1950 he has been with <strong>the</strong> Moscow Engineering Physics<br />

Institute. His major works are on radio engineering and in electronics. (GSE 4, p.<br />

Academician Vsevolod S. Burtsev, tel.938-17-53<br />

Burtsev, Vsevolod S., D. Tech. S. Born in 1927 in Moscow. <strong>Russian</strong> scientist in<br />

control processes and computer technology. Corresponding member since 1976 <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Problems <strong>of</strong> Machine Building, Mechanics and Control Processes Department<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>; academician since 1993. He graduated from <strong>the</strong> Moscow Power<br />

Engineering Institute in 1951 and joined <strong>the</strong> staff <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Precision<br />

Mechanics and Computer Technology. He became a pr<strong>of</strong>essor at <strong>the</strong> institute in<br />

1965 and its Direc<strong>to</strong>r in 1973. From 1973 <strong>to</strong> July 1987, he was <strong>the</strong> Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
