former Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> labora<strong>to</strong>ry, and who, at present also holds a long-term contract<br />

with <strong>the</strong> Hewlett-Packard Company; Dr. I. B. Virbitskaite, Dr. A. A. Sulimov, and<br />

Dr. N. V. Shilov. The main research thrust <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> labora<strong>to</strong>ry is <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong><br />

fundamental methods for describing semantics, <strong>the</strong> specification and verification <strong>of</strong><br />

parallel computer systems and programs.<br />

2, VLSI CAD Labora<strong>to</strong>ry: under Pr<strong>of</strong>essor A. G. Marchuk. Personnel in <strong>the</strong><br />

labora<strong>to</strong>ry number some 23 researchers, including Dr. Z. V. Apanovich, research<br />

scientist D. N. Kuznetsov, Dr. A. E. Nedozya, and research scientist E. V.<br />

Tarasov. Activities in <strong>the</strong> labora<strong>to</strong>ry have included work on CAD/CAM<br />

microelectronics and mechanical engineering. Basic representations and models <strong>of</strong><br />

mechanical objects and graphic interfaces have been developed. These experiments<br />

have been done on <strong>the</strong> construction and application <strong>of</strong> data base systems based on<br />

CLIENT/SERVER architecture--a daunting problem requiring deep thought and<br />

attention. The labora<strong>to</strong>ry has also investigated <strong>the</strong> portable compiler construction<br />

and <strong>the</strong> architecture <strong>of</strong> extensible object-oriented environments (00) has been done<br />

in <strong>the</strong> VLSI CD labora<strong>to</strong>ry.<br />

3. Artificial Intelligence Labora<strong>to</strong>ry: under Dr. T. M. Yakhno. Personnel in <strong>the</strong><br />

labora<strong>to</strong>ry number 14 researchers, including <strong>the</strong> former Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> labora<strong>to</strong>ry Dr.<br />

A. S. Narin'ani (Aleksandr S. Nariniani); Dr. I. E. Schvetsov, Dr. Iurii A.<br />

Zagorulko, Dr. V. V. Telerman, and Dr. C. Ia. Greenberg. The labora<strong>to</strong>ry has<br />

developed knowledge representation means for knowledge bases <strong>of</strong> intelligent<br />

systems, and developed <strong>the</strong> technology for designing intelligent systems.<br />

Labora<strong>to</strong>ry scientists have studied frames, semantic networks, production systems,<br />

and sub definite computation models and <strong>the</strong>y have proved that frame systems may<br />

be transformed in<strong>to</strong> production systems <strong>the</strong>reby providing semantic networks. They<br />

have designed and developed pro<strong>to</strong>types <strong>of</strong> technological systems for artificial<br />

intelligence which use object-oriented means <strong>of</strong> representation, production systems,<br />

and computation models. Expert systems developed in <strong>the</strong> labora<strong>to</strong>ry are in use in<br />

complex technological processes at industrial plants in <strong>the</strong> Novosibirsk region.<br />

4. Parallel Systems Labora<strong>to</strong>ry: under Dr. M. N. Doroyevets (Doroievets).<br />

Personnel in <strong>the</strong> labora<strong>to</strong>ry number 11 researchers, including Dr. Iurii L.<br />

Vishnevsky (skii) (Vishnevskii). The labora<strong>to</strong>ry develops and evaluates advanced<br />

processor architecture; a network node station for using open distributed<br />

communication systems; and <strong>the</strong>y have proposed a new approach referred <strong>to</strong> as<br />

Multithreaded decoupled architecture for exploiting fine and middle-grain<br />

parallelisms in superscalar processors.<br />

5. Labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> Experimental Informatics: under Dr. A. A. Baehrs. The<br />

personnel <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> labora<strong>to</strong>ry number seven researchers. Scientists in <strong>the</strong> labora<strong>to</strong>ry<br />

have taken a new approach <strong>to</strong> modeling multiactivity on multiprocessor systems <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> interactive heterogeneous computing facilities which is an object-constructed<br />

high-level operation environment--CHLOE--a conceptual model which allows one<br />

<strong>to</strong> cover <strong>the</strong> up-<strong>to</strong>-date level <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> problem <strong>of</strong> developing new informatics<br />

platforms. It is a basis for <strong>the</strong> efficient implementation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> platforms. The<br />

labora<strong>to</strong>ry has also been researching <strong>the</strong> techniques and methodologies for<br />

publishing texts using <strong>the</strong> MRAMOR-FA workstation.<br />

6. Systems Programming Labora<strong>to</strong>ry: under Pr<strong>of</strong>essor I. V. Pot<strong>to</strong>sin. Personnel <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> labora<strong>to</strong>ry number 18 researchers, including Pr<strong>of</strong>essor A. V. Zamulin, Dr. G><br />

G. Stepanov, Dr. S. B. Pokrovsky (Pokrovskii), and Dr. V. I. Shelekhov. The<br />

labora<strong>to</strong>ry scientists program languages and develop compilation techniques;<br />

develop models <strong>of</strong> s<strong>of</strong>tware in an advanced programming environment, and<br />

develop methods and <strong>to</strong>ols for environmental support. They develop s<strong>of</strong>tware for<br />

embedded computer systems.<br />
