<strong>Russian</strong> Physicist. He has been a corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General Physics<br />

and Astronomy Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1960, and an academician since<br />

1966. He has been Academician Secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General Physics and Astronomy<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1973. He graduated from <strong>the</strong> Leningrad State<br />

<strong>University</strong> in 1939 and from 1939-1941 and from 1944 <strong>to</strong> 1946 he was an<br />

"aspirant" at <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Physics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR. He began working at <strong>the</strong><br />

institute in 1946, becoming head <strong>of</strong> a labora<strong>to</strong>ry in 1954 and Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

institute in 1968. In 1959, he became a pr<strong>of</strong>essor at Moscow State <strong>University</strong>. In<br />

1961, he was Chief <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Oscillation labora<strong>to</strong>ry and in 1965, Chief <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> P. N.<br />

Lebedev Physics Institute’s Oscillation Division in Moscow. He won <strong>the</strong> 1964<br />

Nobel Prize in Physics for fundamental work in <strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong> quantum electrodynamics.<br />

Toge<strong>the</strong>r with N. G. Basov, he developed a fundamentally new<br />

method <strong>of</strong> generating electromagnetic waves using quantum systems, devising <strong>the</strong><br />

first molecular genera<strong>to</strong>r using beams <strong>of</strong> ammonia molecules--a beam-type maser-in<br />

1954-55. With his colleagues he also developed methods for creating<br />

paramagnetic masers (1957-58). Since 1968, he has been Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Lebedev Physics Institute in Moscow. Since 1969, he has been edi<strong>to</strong>r-in-Chief <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Great Soviet Encyclopedia. He has been on <strong>the</strong> Presidium <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> academy since<br />

1970. In 1971 he became Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> a subdepartment at <strong>the</strong> Moscow<br />

Physicotechnical Institute. Since 1983, he has served as Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General<br />

Physics Institute in Moscow that was set up in 1983 <strong>to</strong> research lasers, solid-state<br />

physics, fusion, spectroscopy, and fiber optics. It is subordinate <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> academy's<br />

General Physics and Astronomy Department. He received <strong>the</strong> Lenin Prize in 1959.<br />

He has been a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> American <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> Arts and <strong>Sciences</strong> since 1971.<br />

Abrikosov, Aleksei A., D. PM. S. Born in June 1928. <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>the</strong>oretical physicist.<br />

He has been a corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1964, and an<br />

academician since December 1987. He graduated from <strong>the</strong> Moscow State <strong>University</strong><br />

in 1948 and worked at <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Physical Problems from 1948 <strong>to</strong> 1965. Since<br />

1965 he has worked at Theoretical Physics Institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> where he has<br />

been Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Metal Physics Labora<strong>to</strong>ry. He has been a pr<strong>of</strong>essor at Moscow<br />

State <strong>University</strong> since 1965. He was named Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> L. F. Vereshchagin High<br />
