Academicians--age and schools: The average age <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> academicians <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Physical<br />

Chemistry and Technology <strong>of</strong> Inorganic Materials Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong><br />

<strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> was almost 75 years in 1991. This average was skewed<br />

considerably by <strong>the</strong> fact that nine <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 24 academicians whose birth dates were<br />

known were over 80 years old. Only one academician's date <strong>of</strong> birth was not<br />

known at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> this analysis. The oldest member was 89 and <strong>the</strong> youngest<br />

was 59. When <strong>the</strong> oc<strong>to</strong>genarians and septuagenarians are removed from <strong>the</strong><br />

analysis--assuming <strong>the</strong>y hold those positions out <strong>of</strong> respect for <strong>the</strong> elderly more<br />

than for <strong>the</strong>ir active contributions <strong>to</strong> scientific research or <strong>to</strong> scientific research<br />

management--<strong>the</strong> average age drops <strong>to</strong> 63. Only nine academicians falin this<br />

category. Seventeen <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 25 academicians graduated from 13 known institutions;<br />

only 8, though degree holders, graduated from institutions not known at this time.<br />

Moscow State <strong>University</strong> graduated three; Leningrad State <strong>University</strong> and <strong>the</strong><br />

Leningrad Polytechnic graduated one each; <strong>the</strong> D. I. Mendeleev Chemical<br />

Engineering Institute in Moscow, two; <strong>the</strong> N. E. Bauman Moscow Higher<br />

Technical School, two, and <strong>the</strong> Moscow <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> Mines, <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

Gorkiy, <strong>the</strong> Kirov Institute <strong>of</strong> Chemical Engineering, <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Kiev, <strong>the</strong><br />

Kiev Industry Institute, <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Kazan', <strong>the</strong> S. M. Kirov Urals<br />

Polytechnic Institute, and <strong>the</strong> Kiev Polytechnic Institute--each graduated one<br />

student. Again, considering <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> older academicians in this department,<br />

<strong>the</strong> choice and opportunity for advanced graduate work was relatively limited for<br />

many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

Corresponding Members--age and schools: The birth dates <strong>of</strong> 29 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 37<br />

corresponding members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> department are known and <strong>the</strong>ir average age is 70.8<br />

years. Fifteen <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se were born before <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> Revolution, and <strong>of</strong> that group<br />

<strong>of</strong> 15 <strong>the</strong> average age was almost 81 years. The group born after <strong>the</strong> revolution<br />

averaged about 60 years in age. Although 24 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 37 corresponding members <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> department held degrees, only 11 institutions are known <strong>to</strong> have graduated 16 <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>se. Institutions from which <strong>the</strong>se 16 graduated included: Moscow State<br />

<strong>University</strong>, two; D. I. Mendeleev Moscow Institute <strong>of</strong> Chemical Engineering, two;<br />

<strong>the</strong> M. I. Kalinin Moscow Institute <strong>of</strong> Nonferrous Metals and Gold, two; <strong>the</strong><br />
