expanded and renamed <strong>the</strong> Scientific Research <strong>of</strong> National Cultures until 1945<br />

when it came under its present name. In 1951 <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Daghestani national<br />

poet Gamzat Tsadasda was added <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> institute name. The institute sec<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong><br />

Archeology and Ethnography was established in 1958. In <strong>the</strong> early 1970s institute<br />

scholars produced a his<strong>to</strong>rico-ethnographic atlas <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> republic. The staff <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

institute numbers 158 researchers <strong>of</strong> whom 23 hold doc<strong>to</strong>rates and 84 hold<br />

candidate degrees. One staff member is a corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong><br />

<strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong>.<br />

Structure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> institute: <strong>the</strong> institute is made up <strong>of</strong> 12 departments:<br />

his<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Soviet period;<br />

his<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pre-Soviet period;<br />

archeology;<br />

ethnography;<br />

Oriental studies;<br />

his<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> arts;<br />

literature;<br />

folklore;<br />

grammar studies;<br />

lexicology; and<br />

lexicography.<br />

Gadzhi G. Gamza<strong>to</strong>v, D. Phlg. S., a corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR from 1984<br />

is Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> institute. O<strong>the</strong>r scientists who supervise <strong>the</strong> research program in<br />

The study-museum holds 9,400 items including documentary materials and<br />

personal collections, Oriental manuscripts numbering 10,636 items, Arabic<br />

documents and books, and <strong>the</strong> archeological deposi<strong>to</strong>ry consists <strong>of</strong> six large<br />

holdings <strong>of</strong> some 1,200,000 items. (See: Ruble, Vol. III, pp. 85-86.)<br />

2. Geology Institute in Makhachkala. Established in 1956. It investigates <strong>the</strong> mineral<br />

resources and underground waters <strong>of</strong> Daghestani.<br />

3. Physics Institute in Makhachkala. Established in 1957. Works on problems <strong>of</strong><br />

semiconduc<strong>to</strong>r physics, <strong>the</strong>rmophysics, cryophysics, Theoretical Physics and<br />

geophysics.<br />
