Retrospect: Established in 1948, <strong>the</strong> institute does <strong>the</strong>oretical and experimental<br />

investigations in chemistry, physical chemistry and <strong>the</strong> physics <strong>of</strong> macromolecular<br />

compounds dealing particularly with <strong>the</strong> formation, structure and properties <strong>of</strong><br />

polymers. Pr<strong>of</strong>essors S. N. Ushakov, M. V. Volkenshtein, S. E. Bresler, B. A.<br />

Dolgoplosk, V. N. Tsvetkov, M. M. Ko<strong>to</strong>n, and S. Ia. Frenkel--all eminent<br />

<strong>Russian</strong> scientists were among those who established this institute. Since 1970, <strong>the</strong><br />

liquid chroma<strong>to</strong>graphy <strong>of</strong> polymers and copolymers has been done at <strong>the</strong> institute<br />

leading <strong>to</strong> appreciable results in micro-column chroma<strong>to</strong>graphy, micro-thin-layer<br />

chroma<strong>to</strong>graphy and chroma<strong>to</strong>graphic porosimetry. Spectroscopic analyses <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

structure and properties <strong>of</strong> polymers <strong>of</strong> various classes is done. The institute<br />

maintains relations with researchers in <strong>the</strong> United States, Germany, Italy, Great<br />

Britain, India, China, France, Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, and Czechoslovakia<br />

Structure and Scientific Personnel: Direc<strong>to</strong>r Pr<strong>of</strong>essor E. F. Panarin, D. Chem. S.,<br />

and corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong>, since 1989;<br />

Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>rs: Nikolai A. Glukhov, C. Chem. S., since 1973, and Iuri N.<br />

Sazanov, since 1981. The labora<strong>to</strong>ries <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> institute concentrate in four major<br />

areas:<br />

(older material)<br />

(1.) The Syn<strong>the</strong>sis and Investigations <strong>of</strong> Thermally Stable Polymers area-mainly<br />

polyimides under <strong>the</strong> direction <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor M. M. Ko<strong>to</strong>n. The three<br />

labora<strong>to</strong>ries under this research area are:<br />

<strong>the</strong> labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> syn<strong>the</strong>sis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>rmally stable polymers,<br />

<strong>the</strong> labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>rmally stable structured and multi-component systems,<br />

and<br />

<strong>the</strong> labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> high-tenacity and <strong>the</strong>rmal lly stable fibers and organic<br />

plastics.<br />

Films and fibers <strong>of</strong> high tensile strength, elastic foam polyimides in temperatures <strong>of</strong> -200<br />

degrees centigrade <strong>to</strong> +400 degrees centigrade have been produced in <strong>the</strong>se<br />

labora<strong>to</strong>ries. High temperature glues, <strong>the</strong>rmoplastic polymide binders have been developed,<br />

and a gas separating membrane for separating oxygen, nitrogen,<br />

hydrogen, methane, and helium has been produced.<br />

(2.) The Anisotropic States in Polymers area under Pr<strong>of</strong>essor S. Ia Frenkel. The<br />

six labora<strong>to</strong>ries in this research area are:<br />

<strong>the</strong> labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> physical chemistry <strong>of</strong> polymers,<br />

<strong>the</strong> labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> chemistry and physical chemistry <strong>of</strong> cellulose and its<br />

derivatives,<br />

<strong>the</strong> labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> anisotropic polymer systems formation,<br />

<strong>the</strong> labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> syn<strong>the</strong>sis and methods <strong>of</strong> formation <strong>of</strong> polymer systems,<br />

<strong>the</strong> labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> polymer chroma<strong>to</strong>graphy, and<br />

<strong>the</strong> labora<strong>to</strong>ry "plant" for fiber spinning under <strong>the</strong> guidance <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essor G. K.<br />

Eliashevich.<br />
