Methods <strong>of</strong> approximation have been developed in <strong>the</strong> Institute for one- and severalvariable<br />

functions in various metrics by means <strong>of</strong> generalized polynomials and<br />

sums <strong>of</strong> exponents (V. P. Kondratjev), rational fractions (L. V. Petrak), splines<br />

(A. A. Sazanov, N. L. Patzko) etc. S<strong>of</strong>tware for mentioned methods was worked<br />

out. Proposed methods and s<strong>of</strong>tware allowed us <strong>to</strong> solve many problems related<br />

with <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> a new technique: some questions, connected with <strong>the</strong><br />

motion control <strong>of</strong> a material points, approximation <strong>of</strong> a bulky volumes <strong>of</strong> a<br />

meteorological information, <strong>the</strong> hardness calculus <strong>of</strong> rubber-metal details,<br />

elaboration <strong>of</strong> non-destructive testing <strong>of</strong> some details, diagnostic <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> blood<br />

current disturbance in <strong>the</strong> pancreas, optimization <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> geometry and characteristics<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hybrid reflec<strong>to</strong>r antennas and elaboration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> algorithms for <strong>the</strong> control <strong>of</strong><br />

such system in particular <strong>of</strong> systems with only double-phase control.<br />

The scientific research have been headed by V. I. Berdyshev, N. I. Chernykh, S. B.<br />

Stechkin, Iurii N. Subbotin. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> problem has been developed jointly with<br />

<strong>the</strong> Steklov Ma<strong>the</strong>matical Institute.<br />

Operation Research Department<br />

The Department was organized in 1967. Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Mazurov Vl. D. has been Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Department from 1967 <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> present time.<br />

The main spheres <strong>of</strong> interests <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> department are <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory and methods <strong>of</strong> Pattern<br />

Recognition, <strong>the</strong>ir program realization and, thus, on this basis solving <strong>the</strong> different<br />

practical problems <strong>of</strong> diagnostics and classification <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> complex objects and<br />

decision making situations in <strong>the</strong> spheres <strong>of</strong> medicine, biology, technology,<br />

economics. The investiga<strong>to</strong>rs in this area are Vl. D. Mazurov, V. S. Kazantsev,<br />

A. I. Smirnov, S. V. Plotnikov, A. I. Krivonogov, N. G. Beletsky (skii) , N.<br />

The o<strong>the</strong>r spheres <strong>of</strong> interest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> department are ma<strong>the</strong>matical models <strong>of</strong> technicoeconomical<br />

systems, <strong>the</strong> invention <strong>of</strong> new methods and s<strong>of</strong>tware for <strong>the</strong> problems<br />

<strong>of</strong> optimal planning <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ore-mining and machine-building enterprises<br />

and <strong>the</strong> adoption <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se methods and s<strong>of</strong>tware in industry. ( V. M. Kislyak, A. S.<br />

Fur<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>the</strong> construction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> models <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>the</strong>matical biomedicine, corresponding<br />

methods and <strong>the</strong>ir realization in <strong>the</strong> s<strong>of</strong>tware and expert systems - for <strong>the</strong> problems<br />

<strong>of</strong> biomedical informatics, diagnostics and <strong>the</strong> problems <strong>of</strong> selecting certain kinds<br />

<strong>of</strong> influence upon <strong>the</strong> states <strong>of</strong> organisms and systems <strong>of</strong> organisms and solving<br />

corresponding practical problems are also <strong>the</strong> spheres <strong>of</strong> interest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> department.<br />

The most essential results:<br />

The committee method has been invented and well-found for <strong>the</strong> problems<br />

<strong>of</strong> Pattern Recognition and Ma<strong>the</strong>matical Programming with contradic<strong>to</strong>ry<br />

constraints.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> basis <strong>of</strong> committee constructions <strong>the</strong>re have been created<br />

commercial s<strong>of</strong>tware KVAZAR-IBM and KVAZAR-PC. They are intended for<br />

solving <strong>the</strong> problems <strong>of</strong> Pattern Recognition, diagnostics and<br />

forecasting. They are well-spread in <strong>the</strong> USSR.<br />
