9. Marine Biology Institute in Vladivos<strong>to</strong>k.<br />

Kas’ianov (Kasianov), Vladimir L. Born in 1940. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Academy</strong> in 1993. Since 1979 he has been <strong>the</strong> Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Marine<br />

Biology Institute in Vladivos<strong>to</strong>k which was created in 1970 <strong>to</strong> study <strong>the</strong><br />

distribution, composition <strong>of</strong> marine life and <strong>the</strong> biology <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Far Eastern seas. In<br />

1991, he was named Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute replacing Dr. Zhirmunskii.<br />

Founded in 1967 as <strong>the</strong> Marine Biology Division and in 1970 it became <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong><br />

Marine Biology <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Far Eastern Science Center (now department). It was<br />

established by Alexei V. Zhirmunskii who directed it until succeeded by Vladimir<br />

L. Kasianov in 1988 and who is its current Direc<strong>to</strong>r (1991). The staff <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

institute <strong>to</strong>tals 554 persons, which includes 196 research workers, 15 doc<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>of</strong><br />

science and 107 candidates <strong>of</strong> science. The institute is comprised <strong>of</strong> 24 labora<strong>to</strong>ries,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Far East State Marine Reserve, <strong>the</strong> Mariculture Preserve "Vos<strong>to</strong>k" and four<br />

biological stations: "Vos<strong>to</strong>k" near Nakhodka, "Stark" on Popov Island,--both <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>se are in <strong>the</strong> Peter <strong>the</strong> Great Bay <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sea <strong>of</strong> Japan--and "Sokol" on Sakhalin<br />

Island, and "Raduga" on Kamchatka. Scientific objectives <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> institute include<br />

<strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> species composition, distribution and ecology <strong>of</strong> marine flora and<br />

fauna; estimation <strong>of</strong> biological productivity <strong>of</strong> shelf zones <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> far eastern seas <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> USSR and adjacent waters <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pacific Ocean; <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> scientific<br />

foundation <strong>of</strong> efficient utilization, preservation and res<strong>to</strong>ration <strong>of</strong> living resources <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> shelf; biological problems <strong>of</strong> mariculture, and <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> adaptations,<br />

on<strong>to</strong>genesis and evolution <strong>of</strong> marine organisms. The institute conducts a Junior<br />

<strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> Marine Biology <strong>to</strong> prepare youngsters <strong>to</strong> study Marine Biology, and<br />

provides <strong>the</strong> base for <strong>the</strong> Chair <strong>of</strong> Marine Biology <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Biological Faculty at <strong>the</strong><br />

Far East State <strong>University</strong>. Structure and Scientific Personnel: Honorary Direc<strong>to</strong>r<br />

Aleksei V. Zhirmunskii, D. Bio. S., since 1967 and since 1970; Present Direc<strong>to</strong>r<br />

Vladimir L. Kasianov, since 1988; Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>rs: Dr. Sergei L. Kondrashev-over<br />

A. Terekhova and <strong>the</strong> managing Direc<strong>to</strong>r for <strong>the</strong> institute is Nikolai V. Lobov.<br />
