institute followed scientific and technical progress in <strong>the</strong> aviation industry.<br />

The Light Alloys Institute in Moscow. The institute was responsible for metallurgy<br />

and <strong>the</strong> processing <strong>of</strong> light alloys in<strong>to</strong> semi-fabricated products.<br />

The L. Ia. Karpov Physical Chemistry SRI in Moscow. Established in 1918. It<br />

specialized in electrochemistry, chemical kinetics, corrosion <strong>of</strong> metals and all<br />

polymerization processes, aerosols research, and radiation chemistry.<br />

Geological-Geophysical Scientific Production Association, it studied terrestrial<br />

geology and geophysics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Arctic and Antarctic.<br />

The Geology, Geophysics, and Mineral Raw Materials SRI in Novosibirsk.<br />

This institute worked on location <strong>of</strong> petroleum and gas deposits in <strong>the</strong> Krasnoyarsk<br />

region.<br />

The Geology SRI in St. Petersburg. Established in 1932, <strong>the</strong> institute specialized in<br />

regional geology and prospecting methods.<br />

The Au<strong>to</strong>mation SRI in Kiev. Founded in 1957. Created <strong>to</strong> do research on au<strong>to</strong>mation<br />

and mechanization <strong>of</strong> industrial enterprises throughout Russia.<br />

The Introscopy SRI in Moscow. Established in 1964 <strong>to</strong> do research in nondestructive<br />

testing <strong>of</strong> all types <strong>of</strong> physical fields and radiation.<br />

The A. A. Blagonravov Machine Science SRI in Moscow. Established in <strong>the</strong><br />

1930s, it researched <strong>the</strong> dynamics and kinetics <strong>of</strong> machinery friction and wear,<br />

mechanical engineering, and strength considerations.<br />

The Biological Testing <strong>of</strong> Chemical Compounds SRI in Kupavna. Established in<br />

1973 for screening all new syn<strong>the</strong>tic chemical compounds beneficial <strong>to</strong> man and <strong>the</strong><br />

environment.<br />

The Electronic Computers SRI in Minsk. The institute designed and produced<br />

computer systems.<br />

The Water Supply, Sewerage, Hydraulic Structures, and Engineering<br />

Hydrogeology SRI in Moscow. The institute researched water treatment,<br />

purification plants, waste water, sewage systems, and hydraulic projects for<br />

industry and municipalities.<br />

The Alpine Geophysics Institute in Nalchik. Established in 1934, <strong>the</strong> institute<br />

researched dangerous atmospheric and hydrologic phenomena and searches for<br />

methods <strong>of</strong> controlling <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

The Central High Altitude Hydrometeorological Observa<strong>to</strong>ry in Moscow.<br />

Established in 1970, it was <strong>the</strong> hub <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> national meteorological observation<br />

network.<br />
