Among <strong>the</strong> main activities <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department are <strong>the</strong> following.<br />

* Publishing activities. The Department prepares camera-ready models <strong>of</strong> some <strong>Russian</strong><br />

ma<strong>the</strong>matical journals and is going <strong>to</strong> extend this activity <strong>to</strong> cover all <strong>Russian</strong><br />

ma<strong>the</strong>matical journals. The plans for <strong>the</strong> future include also preparing cover-<strong>to</strong>cover<br />

English translations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se journals which will be published in <strong>the</strong> West.<br />

* Telecommunications and Information services. The Department is developing and<br />

maintaining <strong>the</strong> noncommercial electronic mail system which will in several years<br />

cover <strong>the</strong> leading ma<strong>the</strong>matical scientific and educational centers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> country.<br />

Also <strong>the</strong>re exist plans <strong>to</strong> develop ma<strong>the</strong>matical data bases suitable for scientific and<br />

educational purposes. This work is <strong>to</strong> be regarded as a part <strong>of</strong> international activities<br />

aiming at creating international scientific multi-media (EuroMath project)<br />

The Information and Publishing Department was organized in July, 1991 jointly by <strong>the</strong><br />

Steklov Ma<strong>the</strong>matical Institute and Ma<strong>the</strong>matical Branch <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Sciences</strong>. The Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department is Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Aleksii B. Zizcenko. Among<br />

<strong>the</strong> main activities <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department are <strong>the</strong> following.<br />

The following persons are involved in <strong>the</strong> publishing activities: Alexander D. Isaak,<br />

Andrei M. Malokos<strong>to</strong>v, Vic<strong>to</strong>r M. Muzafarov. Dr. Sergei P. Suetin supervises this<br />

activities.<br />

2. Telecommunications and Information services.<br />

The Department is developing and maintaining a wide area information system which will<br />

in several years cover <strong>the</strong> leading ma<strong>the</strong>maical scientific and educational centers <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> country. This work is <strong>to</strong> be regarded as a part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> international activites<br />

aiming at creating international scientific multi-media for ma<strong>the</strong>maticians (EuroMath<br />

project). The Department will maintain a basic node <strong>of</strong> EmNet/fSU network - which<br />

is <strong>the</strong> fSU part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pan-European subject oriented network which will connect<br />

leading European ma<strong>the</strong>matical centers.<br />

The Department develops and maintains several ma<strong>the</strong>matical data bases suitable for<br />

scientific and educatinal purposes: a direc<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> ma<strong>the</strong>maticians, direc<strong>to</strong>ry<br />

<strong>of</strong> ma<strong>the</strong>matical organizations, database on ma<strong>the</strong>matical publications etc.<br />

The Department maintain Gopher server-gopher.ras.ru and WWW server-www.ras.ru,<br />

which distribute this information. In <strong>the</strong> frame <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> EmNet and RAS-GMD<br />

projects, Department takes part in <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> scientific telecommunication<br />

infrastructure in Russia. Department maintain one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> basic nodes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Moscow<br />

fiber optic backbone and will provide international connections between this<br />

backbone and European networks. The Department is an IP service provider for<br />

several scientific orginizations. Telecommunication and information services <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Department is maintained by Ekaterina V. Beskova, Andrei A. Gonchar, Olga P.<br />

Kalachyova, Vladimir R. Telesnin, Dr. Sergei E. Teriaev, Eugene Mamchits,<br />

Maksim E. Moshkow, Alexei A. Pogrebkov, Michail A. Zhizhchenko. Dr. Nikolai<br />

N. Repin supervises this activity.<br />
