Literature Institute in Moscow that dates back <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> mid-1930s and that serves as<br />

<strong>the</strong> principal place for research on contemporary <strong>Russian</strong> and foreign literature in<br />

Likhachev, Dmitrii S. Born in 1906 in St. Petersburg. <strong>Russian</strong> literary critic and<br />

cultural his<strong>to</strong>rian. Corresponding member, 1953, and academician since 1970.<br />

Principal membership in Literature and Language Department. He graduated from<br />

Leningrad State <strong>University</strong> in 1928. He began his work at Pushkin House in 1939<br />

(Institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> Literature) and became head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> institute's sec<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> ancient<br />

<strong>Russian</strong> literature in 1954. From 1946 <strong>to</strong> 1953, he was a pr<strong>of</strong>essor at Leningrad<br />

State <strong>University</strong>. His writings are many and distinguished. He has emphasized <strong>the</strong><br />

aes<strong>the</strong>tic distinctiveness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> culture <strong>of</strong> ancient Rus' and <strong>the</strong> problems <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

general <strong>the</strong>ory <strong>of</strong> art. His works are characterized by a concentration on social<br />

ideology, literature, folk poetry, and <strong>the</strong> fine arts. He is a foreign member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Bulgarian (1963), Austrian (1968), Serbian (1972), and Hungarian (1973)<br />

academies <strong>of</strong> sciences. He holds honorary degrees from Torun (1964), Oxford<br />

(1967), and Edinburgh (1970). Recipient <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> State Prize in 1952 and 1969. In<br />

1985, he received <strong>the</strong> V. G. Belinskii Prize for criticism. (GSE 14, p. 496.)<br />

Lomidze, Georgii I., D. Phil. S. Born in 1914 in Tbilisi. <strong>Russian</strong> literary scholar.<br />

Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Literature and Language Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong><br />

since 1972. He graduated from <strong>the</strong> M. Gorkiy Institute <strong>of</strong> Literature in 1947. Since<br />

1955, he has chaired <strong>the</strong> division <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> his<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> literature <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gorkiy<br />

Institute <strong>of</strong> World Literature. He began publishing in 1935. Doc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> Philosophical<br />

<strong>Sciences</strong> (1960). He was a pr<strong>of</strong>essor at <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> Social <strong>Sciences</strong> under <strong>the</strong><br />

CC CPSU from 1965. In 1980, he received <strong>the</strong> N. A. Dobroliubov Prize for his<br />
