(Plate, Nikolai A., D. Chem. S. Born in 1934 in Moscow. <strong>Russian</strong> chemist.<br />

Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General and Technical Chemistry Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Academy</strong> since 1974, and academician since 1987. He graduated in 1956 from<br />

Moscow State <strong>University</strong>--a V. A. Kargin student. Since 1956, he has been<br />

working at Moscow State <strong>University</strong> where in 1966, he was appointed head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Polymer Modification Labora<strong>to</strong>ry. Since 1963, he has been working at <strong>the</strong> Institute<br />

<strong>of</strong> Petrochemical Syn<strong>the</strong>sis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR. Since 1985, Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> A. V.<br />

Topchiev Petroleum Refining and Petrochemical Syn<strong>the</strong>sis Institute in Moscow.<br />

The institute researches <strong>the</strong> physics <strong>of</strong> reservoirs, reservoir modeling, enhanced<br />

recovery techniques, and petrochemical refining processes It was established in<br />

1959 and is subordinate <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> academy's General and Technical Chemistry<br />

Department. He formulated <strong>the</strong> principles <strong>of</strong> polymer modification through<br />

reactions in macromolecular chains. He developed <strong>the</strong> statistical <strong>the</strong>ory on <strong>the</strong><br />

reactivity <strong>of</strong> links in a polymer chain. He is presently direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong><br />

Petro-Chemical Syn<strong>the</strong>sis named after A. V. Topchiev (IPCS) located in Moscow.<br />

(GSE 20, p. 206.))<br />

Retrospect: Founded in 1934 as <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Combustible Resources. In 1948 <strong>the</strong><br />

Institute <strong>of</strong> Petroleum was founded on <strong>the</strong> petroleum labora<strong>to</strong>ries <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong><br />

Combustible Resources. In 1958, <strong>the</strong> Petrochemical Syn<strong>the</strong>sis Institute was<br />

established on <strong>the</strong> basis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> chemistry and technology <strong>of</strong> petroleum/gas<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Petroleum. The institute is comprised <strong>of</strong> 27 scientific<br />

labora<strong>to</strong>ries with a <strong>to</strong>tal staff <strong>of</strong> 640 <strong>of</strong> whom 370 are scientific Personnel, which<br />

includes four members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong>, 40 pr<strong>of</strong>essors,<br />

doc<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>of</strong> sciences and 190 research scientists with Ph.D. degrees. The institute<br />

maintains a design bureau and workshop which has 170 persons. The institute also<br />

maintains a branch in <strong>the</strong> city <strong>of</strong> Sara<strong>to</strong>v with 50 workers.<br />
