membership in <strong>the</strong> Biochemistry, Biophysics, and Chemistry <strong>of</strong> Physiologically<br />

Active Compounds Department (now <strong>the</strong> Physical and Chemical Biology<br />

Department) <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> academy and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department since 1981. He<br />

graduated from <strong>the</strong> D. I. Mendeleev Moscow Chemico-Technological Institute in<br />

1947. He worked at <strong>the</strong> Chemical Physics Institute from 1947 <strong>to</strong> 1960 when he<br />

joined <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department in a labora<strong>to</strong>ry studying natural polymers and joined<br />

<strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> biochemistry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Novosibirsk Institute <strong>of</strong> Organic Chemistry.<br />

In 1962, he acted as Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Natural Polymers Labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Organic<br />

Chemistry Institute in Novosibirsk that was established in 1958 and whose basic<br />

work is in <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> aromatic and heterocyclic chemistry and in natural products.<br />

He was named Direc<strong>to</strong>r-organizer <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Novosibirsk Bioorganic Chemistry. He<br />

was named <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Presidium <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Branch in 1988. From 1967 <strong>to</strong> 1983, he<br />

was a pr<strong>of</strong>essor on <strong>the</strong> faculty <strong>of</strong> natural sciences holding <strong>the</strong> chair in molecular<br />

biology from 1979. He is an Honored Scientist <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> former Soviet Union. He<br />

received <strong>the</strong> Laureate Prize <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Soviet Ministry in 1987, and <strong>the</strong> M. M. Shemiakin<br />

AN SSSR Prize in 1988. He holds o<strong>the</strong>r recognitions and awards for his work.<br />

Kon<strong>to</strong>rovich, Aleksei Z., D. GM. S. Born in 1934. Geologist. Specialist in general<br />

geology and <strong>the</strong> geochemistry <strong>of</strong> oil and gas. Academician since 1990. Deputy<br />

Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Geology and Geophysics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department in<br />

Akademgorodok-Novosibirsk. He is <strong>the</strong> author <strong>of</strong> 26 research works and co-author<br />

<strong>of</strong> 360 publications. His monographs “The Geology <strong>of</strong> Oil and Gas <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian<br />

Platform,” (1976) and “Prognosis <strong>of</strong> Oil and Gas Reserves” (1981) are thought <strong>to</strong><br />

be most significant. He is a pr<strong>of</strong>essor at <strong>the</strong> Novosibirsk State <strong>University</strong> where he<br />

has directed <strong>the</strong> doc<strong>to</strong>rate work <strong>of</strong> eight students and <strong>the</strong> postgraduate work <strong>of</strong> 55<br />

aspirants for <strong>the</strong> candidate degree. He is on <strong>the</strong> Scientific Council on problems <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

geology and geochemistry <strong>of</strong> oil and gas <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lithology<br />

Committee, and is coordina<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> studies on Oil and Gas in <strong>the</strong> Vos<strong>to</strong>k Region<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scientific Council for <strong>the</strong> “Sibir” program <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department. He is<br />

Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Novosibirsk Oblast Scientific Technical Oil and Gas Development<br />

Department imeni Academician I. M. Gubkina.<br />

Koropachinskii, Igor Iurii, D. Bio. S. Born in 1928. Biolgist and Dendrologist.<br />

Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General Biology Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department since December 1987, and academician<br />

since 1992. He has authored and co-authored 85 scientific works <strong>of</strong> which 12 are<br />

important mongraphs. He graduated from <strong>the</strong> Siberian Forestry Technology Institute<br />

in 1951. He was an aspirant, assistant, docent, and held <strong>the</strong> chair in Forest Culture<br />

at that institute. He was a senior researcher at <strong>the</strong> V. N. Sukachev Forestry and<br />

Timber Institute (in Krasnaiorsk) from 1960 <strong>to</strong> 1962. From 1962 <strong>to</strong> 1976, he was<br />

Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> that institute and from 1977 <strong>to</strong> 1983, he was Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> that<br />

institute. In 1983 he was named <strong>the</strong> Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Central Siberian Botanical<br />

Garden in Novosibirsk that was started in 1958 in order <strong>to</strong> exchange seeds and<br />

plants with o<strong>the</strong>r botanical gardens in Russia and abroad <strong>to</strong> enrich Siberian flora. He<br />

has been a pr<strong>of</strong>essor at <strong>the</strong> Siberian Technological Institute since 1982 where he has<br />

guided <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> 13 aspirants for <strong>the</strong> candidate degree. He is Deputy Chairman <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Scientific Council on <strong>the</strong> environmental problems.<br />

Koval’chuk, (Kovalchuk) Boris M., D. Tech. S. Born in 1940. Engineer. Specialist<br />

in <strong>the</strong> fields <strong>of</strong> electronics and electrotechnics and electrophysics. Corresponding<br />

member since December 1987, and an academician since 1992. He has authored 130<br />

scientific works and is credited with 11 inventions. He graduated from <strong>the</strong> Tomsk<br />

Polytechnical Institute imeni S. M. Kirov in 1962 and worked at <strong>the</strong> Nuclear<br />

Physics Electronics, and Au<strong>to</strong>mation Institute in Tomsk from 1962 <strong>to</strong> 1970. In 1970<br />

he became Head <strong>of</strong> a labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> high energy electrotechnics and<br />

in 1978, he was made Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pulsed Power Labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> High Currents<br />

Electronics Institute in Tomsk. He is on <strong>the</strong> Scientific Council on Pulsed Power.<br />
