The St. Petersburg Scientific Center<br />

Chairman: Alferov, Zhores I., D. PM. S. Born in 1930. <strong>Russian</strong> physicist. He has<br />

been an academician <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General Physics and Astronomy Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN<br />

SSSR from 1979. In 1963, he proposed that heterostructures be used for<br />

semiconduc<strong>to</strong>r lasers. The CO2 gas dynamic laser that resulted was proposed by<br />

Prokhorov and V. K. Koniukhov in 1967 and built in 1970. Since 1968, he has<br />

been Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Contact Phenomenon in Semiconduc<strong>to</strong>rs Labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> A. F.<br />

I<strong>of</strong>fe Physical Technical Institute. In 1984, he was awarded <strong>the</strong> USSR State Prize<br />

for his work--with o<strong>the</strong>rs--on "Isoperiodic Heterostructures <strong>of</strong> Multicomponent<br />

(Quartenary) Solid Solutions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Semiconduc<strong>to</strong>r Compounds A3B5," published<br />

from 1971-1981. In December 1987, he was made Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> I<strong>of</strong>fe Physical<br />

Technical Institute. In Apri<strong>of</strong> 1989 he became Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> St. Petersburg<br />

Scientific Center and was elected a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Presidium <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> academy.<br />

First Deputy Chairman: Ponomarev, Valentin M., D. Tech. S. Since 1978, he<br />

has been Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Computer Center in St. Petersburg that was established in<br />

1978 as a multilevecomputing and data processing complex serving academy<br />

institutes in <strong>the</strong> St. Petersburg area. It develops methods for <strong>the</strong> au<strong>to</strong>mation <strong>of</strong><br />

scientific research and creates program packages and systems for research design<br />

and control. He was named Deputy Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> St. Petersburg Scientific<br />

Center in March 1988.<br />

Dubovitskii, Fedor I., D. Chem. S. Born in 1907. Since 1975, he has served as a<br />

Deputy Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Noginsk Scientific Center that is subordinate <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Chemical Technical and Biological <strong>Sciences</strong> Section <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Sciences</strong>. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General and Technical Chemistry<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR from 1979. Since 1962, he has been Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Chemical Physics Institute in Moscow that is subordinate <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> General and<br />

Technical Chemistry Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> academy. The institute does combustion<br />

research and studies Chemical kinetics in various fields. In 1975, he was named<br />

Deputy Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Noginsk Scientific Center. Since 1978, he has been Head<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Combustion Division <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Chemical Physics Institute in Moscow that was<br />

established in 1931 <strong>to</strong> do combustion research and study <strong>the</strong> Chemical kinetics in<br />

various fields.<br />

Kurdiumov, Georgii V., D. PM. S. Born in 1902 in Rylsk, in Kursk Oblast. <strong>Russian</strong><br />

physicist. Corresponding member, 1946, and academician, 1953. Originally elected<br />

<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Physical and Ma<strong>the</strong>matical <strong>Sciences</strong> Department. Principal membership is in<br />

<strong>the</strong> General Physics and Astronomy Department. Since 1969, academician <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Ukrainian <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> Physical and Technical Problems <strong>of</strong> Materials<br />

<strong>Sciences</strong> Department. He graduated from <strong>the</strong> Leningrad Polytechnical Institute in<br />
