Physics, and Theoretical Medicine Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ukrainian academy <strong>of</strong><br />

sciences since 1969 and a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> GDR Republic <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> Naturalists<br />

since 1966. He graduated from <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Kiev in 1946 and from <strong>the</strong> Kiev<br />

Medical Institute in 1949. He became head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Animal Physiology <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Kiev in 1956. In 1958, he became head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> division <strong>of</strong> general<br />

physiology <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nervous system that he had organized at <strong>the</strong> A. A. Bogomolets<br />

Institute <strong>of</strong> Physiology <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ukrainian AN SSR. Since 1966, he has been direc<strong>to</strong>r<br />

<strong>of</strong> that institute in Kiev. Established in 1953, <strong>the</strong> institute does research on basic<br />

and applied problems <strong>of</strong> physiology. His works have included work on cellular<br />

mechanism <strong>of</strong> nervous activity. He was <strong>the</strong> first in <strong>the</strong> U.S.S.R. <strong>to</strong> use<br />

microelectrodes in <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> nerve cells. He was awarded <strong>the</strong> I. P. Pavlov Prize<br />

in 1962. Since 1970, he has been direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Experimental Medical Institute in<br />

St. Petersburg. In 1977, he received <strong>the</strong> I. M. Sechenov Prize for his work.(GSE<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since December 1987; Academician in 1993.<br />

Sviderskii, Vladimir L., D. Bio. S. Born in 1931. Corresponding member since<br />

1981. Academician <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Physiology Departmenta <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since December<br />

1987. Since 1982, he has been Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> I. M. Sechenov Evolutionary<br />

Physiology and Biochemistry Institute in St. Petersburg. that is subordinate <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

academy's Physiology Department. It was created in 1956 and studies <strong>the</strong> problems<br />

<strong>of</strong> evolutionary physiology and <strong>the</strong> biological effects <strong>of</strong> radiation. In 1986, he was<br />

<strong>the</strong> recipient <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> L. A. Orbeli Prize in physiology for his contributions <strong>to</strong> <strong>Russian</strong><br />

physiology.<br />
