Membership Listing <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General Physics and Astronomy Department: A<br />

brief biographical sketch <strong>of</strong> each academician and corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

subject-matter departments <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> RAS was given, followed <strong>the</strong>reafter by a<br />

presentation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> scientific research institutes subordinate <strong>to</strong> that department.<br />

Sources <strong>of</strong> this information have been entries digested from <strong>the</strong> Great Soviet<br />

Encyclopedia (MacMillan), and from <strong>the</strong> Direc<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> Soviet Officials: Science and<br />

Education for <strong>the</strong> years <strong>of</strong> 1980,1985, 1987, and 1989. The biographical<br />

information has been compiled from a number <strong>of</strong> different publications. Even when<br />

biographical material has been used from <strong>the</strong> Great Soviet Encyclopedia, those items<br />

have <strong>of</strong>ten been modified by using later information from o<strong>the</strong>r sources. All <strong>of</strong> this<br />

biographical material--and <strong>the</strong> information on <strong>the</strong> Scientific Research Institutes--has<br />

been reviewed, amended, and brought up <strong>to</strong> date by staff members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Presidium<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> in Moscow--a process which continues.<br />

Keldysh, (Keldish) Leonid V., D. PM. S. Born in April 1931 in Moscow. <strong>Russian</strong><br />

physicist. He has been a corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General Physics and<br />

Astronomy Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1968, and an academician since<br />

1976. He graduated from Moscow State <strong>University</strong> in 1954, and went <strong>to</strong> work at<br />

<strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Physics. He became a pr<strong>of</strong>essor at Moscow State <strong>University</strong> in<br />

1969. His principal works have dealt with quantum many-particle <strong>the</strong>ory and with<br />

solid-state physics. He is author <strong>of</strong> a number <strong>of</strong> monographs on <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory <strong>of</strong><br />

semiconduc<strong>to</strong>r characteristics in strong electric fields. Since 1976, he has been<br />

Chief <strong>of</strong> "Keldysh's subdepartment" and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Theory <strong>of</strong> Superconducting<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Nuclear Physics Division <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> P. N. Lebedev Physics Institute<br />

in Moscow. From 1972 until 1988, Keldysh was Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> P. N. Lebedev<br />

Physics Institute Branch in Troitsk and in 1988 he became Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Moscow<br />

Institute itself. From 1976, he also served as a Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spectroscopy<br />

Institute in Troitsk that is subordinate <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> academy's General Physics and<br />

Astronomy Department. He is now Academician Secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong><br />

<strong>Academy</strong>'s Department <strong>of</strong> General Physics and Astronomy in Moscowl. (GSE, 12,<br />

<strong>Russian</strong> Physicist. He has been a corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General Physics<br />

and Astronomy Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1966, and an academician since<br />

1972. He graduated from Moscow State <strong>University</strong> in 1947. He worked at <strong>the</strong><br />

Moscow State Institute <strong>of</strong> Measures and Measuring Instruments from 1948 <strong>to</strong><br />

1955. From 1956 he worked at <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Physical Problems. Since 1963, he<br />

has served as Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> S. I. Vavilov Physical Problems Institute in<br />

Moscow. He was named Chief <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Low Temperature Magnetic Properties<br />
