seismic waves. He is a pr<strong>of</strong>essor at <strong>the</strong> Novosibirsk State <strong>University</strong> where he has<br />

guided <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> three aspirants for <strong>the</strong> candidate degree. His work has also<br />

produced methods for determining <strong>the</strong> existence <strong>of</strong> oil and gas reserves in Siberia.<br />

Goriushkin, Leonid M., D. Hist. S. Born in 1927. His<strong>to</strong>rian. Specialist in <strong>the</strong><br />

Regional His<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> Russia and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Soviet Period. He has been a corresponding<br />

member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> His<strong>to</strong>ry Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> since 1990.<br />

He has written or co-authored 300 pieces <strong>of</strong> which 14 are book-length monographs.<br />

He is a pr<strong>of</strong>essor at <strong>the</strong> Novosibirsk State <strong>University</strong> where he has guided <strong>the</strong> work<br />

<strong>of</strong> two doc<strong>to</strong>ral students and supervised <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> 28 aspirants for <strong>the</strong> candidate<br />

degree. In 1986, he became Head <strong>of</strong> a Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> His<strong>to</strong>ry,<br />

Philology and Philosophy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department. He is on <strong>the</strong> edi<strong>to</strong>rial board <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> his<strong>to</strong>rical series <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> journal “Sibirsk” published in <strong>the</strong> USA. He serves as<br />

Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> his<strong>to</strong>rical commission <strong>to</strong> celebrate <strong>the</strong> 100th year <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> founding <strong>of</strong><br />

Novosibirsk and is Deputy Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Soviet House <strong>of</strong> Scientists in<br />

Akademgorodok.<br />

Grachev, Mikhail A., D. Biochem. S. Born in 1939. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Biochemistry, Biophysics, and Chemistry <strong>of</strong> Physiologically Active Compounds <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1987. Biochemist. Specialist in bioorganic chemical fermentation<br />

and analytical chemistry. He graduated from <strong>the</strong> Moscow State <strong>University</strong> in 1961<br />

and began working at <strong>the</strong> Natural Compounds Institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR. From<br />

1965 <strong>to</strong> 1984, he headed a labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Novosibirsk Institute <strong>of</strong> Organic<br />

Chemistry, heading also a Labora<strong>to</strong>ry in Ultra-micro biochemistry at <strong>the</strong><br />

Novosibirsk Institute <strong>of</strong> Bioorganic Chemistry from 1984 <strong>to</strong> 1987. In 1987, he<br />

became Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Limnological Institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong><br />

located in Irkutsk. He has authored and co-authored some 111 scientific works <strong>of</strong><br />

which three are major monographs. He has supervised <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> ten aspirants for<br />

<strong>the</strong> candidate degree. He is on <strong>the</strong> Scientific Council on Analytical Chemistry. He<br />

received a State Prize in 1985. In December 1990, <strong>the</strong> Baikal International Center<br />

for Ecological Research was established under Grachev’s direction at ceremonies<br />

attended by representatives from nine countries. He was made <strong>the</strong> Executive Direc<strong>to</strong>r<br />

<strong>of</strong> BICER that is located at <strong>the</strong> Limnological Institute in Irkutsk, Russia.<br />

Gritsko, Gennadii M., D. Tech. S. Born in 1930. Engineer. Specialist in research in<strong>to</strong><br />

pressures <strong>of</strong> pits in coal mines. Corresponding member since 1990. He is Direc<strong>to</strong>r<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Coal Institute in Kemerovo. He is author <strong>of</strong> 20 scientific works and co-author<br />

<strong>of</strong> 121, <strong>of</strong> which eight were important monographs. He introduced <strong>the</strong> method for<br />

predicting pressures in coal mine pits and developed <strong>the</strong> technology <strong>to</strong> implement <strong>the</strong><br />

method. He teaches at <strong>the</strong> Kuzbass Polytechnic Institute where he has guided <strong>the</strong><br />

work <strong>of</strong> two doc<strong>to</strong>ral and 42 aspirants for <strong>the</strong> candidate degree. He was on <strong>the</strong><br />

Scientific Council on physical Technical Problems in <strong>the</strong> exploitation <strong>of</strong> useful<br />

minerals <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Geology, Geochemistry and Mining <strong>Sciences</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN<br />

SSSR; on <strong>the</strong> Scientific-Technical Council a government ministry; on <strong>the</strong> Council on<br />

<strong>the</strong> mechanical and ma<strong>the</strong>matical l, energetics and earth sciences <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> academy. He is on <strong>the</strong> specialists’ supervisory panel for<br />

dissertation defense and Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> doc<strong>to</strong>rate granting body <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong><br />

Coal. He is edi<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> a scientific journal and Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Kemerovo Scientific<br />

Center <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department. Under Dr. Gritsko’s leadership, an International<br />

Center for Coal research is being organized in Kemerovo under <strong>the</strong> Kemerovo<br />

Scientific Center.<br />

Ivanova, Ludmila N., D. Med. S. Born in 1929. Endocrinologist. Corresponding<br />

member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1991. Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> Physiological Genetics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Cy<strong>to</strong>logy and Genetics <strong>of</strong><br />
