Department’s commission for research in<strong>to</strong> subterranean waters in Siberia and in<br />

<strong>the</strong> Far East, and a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hydrogeology Association.<br />

Poliakov, Gleb V., D. GM. S. Born in 1931. Geologist. Specialist in petrography and<br />

petrology, and in <strong>the</strong> magmatic formations <strong>of</strong> Siberia. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry, and Mining <strong>Sciences</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

AN SSSR from 1981--reconfirmed in 1992. He graduated from <strong>the</strong> Tomsk<br />

Polytechnical Institute imeni S. M. Kirov in 1953 and upon graduation continued <strong>to</strong><br />

work <strong>the</strong>re. He is <strong>the</strong> author <strong>of</strong> 163 scientific publications <strong>of</strong> which five are<br />

monographs. In 1960, he joined <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Geology and Geophysics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Siberian Department, serving as a scientific researcher, both junior and senior, and<br />

Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> labora<strong>to</strong>ry studying magmatic formation (1976), becoming Deputy<br />

Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> institute in 1978, and Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> metallurgy,<br />

petrography, geochemistry and mining deposits in 1985. In 1982, he was made<br />

Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Council on doc<strong>to</strong>ral dissertations for <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Geology,<br />

Geophysics, Geochemistry and Mining <strong>Sciences</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department. As a<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essor, he has guided <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> ten aspirants for <strong>the</strong> candidate degree. In<br />

1984, he was Deputy Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Petrographic Scientific Council. He<br />

is Head edi<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> journal Geology and Geophysics. He received <strong>the</strong> State Prize<br />

in 1983. He is currently heading a research program on <strong>the</strong> magmatic formations <strong>of</strong><br />

unstable zones, <strong>the</strong>ir petrology, and <strong>the</strong> evolution <strong>of</strong> economic minerals. Presently<br />

he is Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Petrology, Geochemistry and Location <strong>of</strong> Mineral deposits<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Geology Institute in Akademgorodok-Novosibirsk as well as<br />

Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Magmatic Formation Labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> that department. He is holder <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Badge <strong>of</strong> Honor for his work.<br />

Proskuriakov, Nikolai M. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Geology, Geophysics,<br />

Geochemistry, and Mining <strong>Sciences</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since December<br />

Sergeev, Konstantin F., D. GM. S. Born in 1931. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry, and Mining <strong>Sciences</strong> Department and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Far Eastern Department since 1979. Since 1977, he has been Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Marine Geology and Geophysics Institute (formerly <strong>the</strong> Complex Scientific<br />

Research Institute--Sakhalin) in Novo Aleksandrovsk that is subordinate <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Far<br />

Eastern Department and that does research in <strong>the</strong> fields <strong>of</strong> oceanography and<br />

geophysics, including seismology, hydro-acoustics, and <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> tidal waves.<br />

Sobolev, Gennadii A., D. PM. S. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Geology,<br />

Geophysics, Geochemistry, and Mining <strong>Sciences</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> in<br />

1991. Since 1974, he has headed <strong>the</strong> Fracture Mechanics Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> O. Iurii<br />

Shmidt Earth Physics Institute in Moscow. Since 1991 he has headed <strong>the</strong> Modeling<br />

and Processes Analysis in Earthquake Focus Labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> institute.<br />

Tim<strong>of</strong>eev, Petr P., D. GM. S. Born in 1918 in Viazma, Smolensk Oblast. <strong>Russian</strong><br />

geologist. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry, and<br />

Mining <strong>Sciences</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1976. He graduated from<br />

Moscow State <strong>University</strong> in 1943. In 1950, he joined <strong>the</strong> staff <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Geology<br />

Institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR. From 1960 <strong>to</strong> June 1988, he served as Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Geology Institute in Moscow. In June 1988, he was made Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Geology Institute which was established in 1937 <strong>to</strong> coordinate geological research<br />

with o<strong>the</strong>r branches <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> academy and with <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r republic academies. His<br />

works are in <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> geological formations <strong>of</strong> coal. State Prize, 1972.<br />

Iakovlev, Vik<strong>to</strong>r L., D. Tech. S. Born in 1934. Mining Engineer. Specialist in mining.<br />

Corresponding member since 1990. From 1982 <strong>to</strong> 1984 he taught at <strong>the</strong> Sverdlovsk<br />
