Stepin. He is heading study and research in <strong>the</strong> dialectics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong><br />

socialism <strong>to</strong>day and <strong>the</strong> essential contradictions and qualitative renewal <strong>of</strong> socialist<br />

Meliukhin, Serafim T., D. Phil. S. Born in 1927. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Philosophy and Law Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1981. Member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bureau<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department.<br />

Romodanovskiaia (aya), Elena K., D. Philological S. Born in 1937, she graduated<br />

from <strong>the</strong> Leningrad State <strong>University</strong> in 1959. She has been a corresponding member<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Language and Literature Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR from 1991. From 1962<br />

<strong>to</strong> 1967, she was an aspirant at <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> Literature located at Pushkin<br />

House. In 1968 she completed her candidate dissertation, and in 1975 she became a<br />

leading senior scientific researcher <strong>the</strong>re. In 1988, she completed her doc<strong>to</strong>ral<br />

degree. She is a specialist in <strong>the</strong> literature <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 17th-century Siberian Terri<strong>to</strong>ry. She<br />

has participated in a number <strong>of</strong> scientific conferences, and is an edi<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> a number<br />

<strong>of</strong> publications.<br />

Rutkevich, Mikhail N., D. Phil. S. Born in 1917 in Kiev. Philosopher. Corresponding<br />

member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Philosophy and Law Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1970. He<br />

graduated from <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Physics at <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Kiev in 1939 and<br />

started teaching philosophy in 1947. From 1953 <strong>to</strong> 1966, he headed <strong>the</strong><br />

Subdepartment <strong>of</strong> Philosophy at Urals <strong>University</strong> in Ekaterinburg--<strong>the</strong>n Sverdlovsk,<br />

and from 1966 <strong>to</strong> 1972 he served as dean <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> university's Department <strong>of</strong><br />

Philosophy. From 1972 <strong>to</strong> 1976, he was Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Sociological<br />

Research <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> in Moscow. His works are on dialectical materialism,<br />

his<strong>to</strong>rical materialism, and sociological research. He holds various medals and<br />

orders. (GSE 22, p. 513.)<br />

Shinkaruk, Vladimir I., D. Phil. S. Born in 1928. (Philosophy). Corresponding<br />

member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Philosophy and Law Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1981. Since<br />

1968, he has been Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Philosophy Institute in Kiev. Since 1978, he has<br />

been an academician <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Literature, Linguistics and Art department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Ukrainian <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong>. The Ukrainian <strong>Academy</strong>'s Council on<br />

Philosophical and Social Problems <strong>of</strong> Science and Technology is under Academician<br />

V. I. Shinkaruk, who was awarded <strong>the</strong> Manuil’skii Prize for His<strong>to</strong>ry, Philosophy,<br />

and Law in 1977 and who was <strong>the</strong> recipient <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> State Prize for Science and<br />

Technology in 1982.<br />

Sok<strong>to</strong>yev, Aleksandr B., D. Philological S. Born in 1931. Specialist in literature and<br />

folklore. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Philosophy and Law Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Academy</strong> and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department since 1990. Head <strong>of</strong> a sec<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

His<strong>to</strong>ry, Philology and Philosophy Institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department in<br />

Novosibirsk-Akademgorodok. In 1991, he assumed <strong>the</strong> Direc<strong>to</strong>rship <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute<br />

<strong>of</strong> Philology in Akademgorodok. In <strong>the</strong> 1990s, <strong>the</strong> institute joined with <strong>the</strong> Institute<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Physico-Engineering Problems <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> North under corresponding member<br />

Larionov, and with <strong>the</strong> Cryology <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Earth Institute under corresponding member<br />

Melnikov in Tiumen <strong>to</strong> form a new International research Center for Nor<strong>the</strong>rn<br />

Terri<strong>to</strong>ries Development in Siberia. As Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> new Institute <strong>of</strong> Philology in<br />

Akademgorodok-Novosibirsk, Dr. Sok<strong>to</strong>yev will play a major role in <strong>the</strong> development<br />

<strong>of</strong> this new international research center. He has authored 119 scientific<br />

works, <strong>of</strong> which two monographs have particular significance, and he is <strong>the</strong> coauthor<br />

<strong>of</strong> 10 publications <strong>of</strong> which two are monographs, <strong>of</strong> which “The His<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong><br />

Buriat Soviet Literature” is one (1967). He teaches at <strong>the</strong> Buriat State Pedagogical<br />
