Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Economics and Organization <strong>of</strong> Industrial Production Institute at<br />

Novosibirsk. His principal works are on labor productivity, wages, standard <strong>of</strong><br />

living, and in developing models for future economic planning. In 1988, he was one<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> economics advisers <strong>to</strong> Mikhail Gorbachev. (GSE 1, p. 130.) (See Above).<br />

Bogomolov, Oleg T. Academician <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Economics Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since<br />

1981. Since 1969, he has been Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Economic World Socialist System<br />

Institute in Moscow that was founded in 1961 and which studies <strong>the</strong>oretical and<br />

practical principles and problems <strong>of</strong> building a world socialist economic order. In<br />

1977, he was a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> edi<strong>to</strong>rial council for publications <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

His<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> Natural Science and Technology <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong>.<br />

The staff consists <strong>of</strong> 291 researchers <strong>of</strong> whom 28 hold doc<strong>to</strong>ral degrees and 131<br />

hold candidate degrees. One academician and two corresponding members serve on<br />

<strong>the</strong> staff. The institute under this reorganization and renaming has also taken on new<br />

research priorities that are reflected in <strong>the</strong> organization <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> institute. The institute is<br />

a major graduate training center in economics. Its library houses some 100,000<br />

items.<br />

Fedorenko, Nikolai P., D. Econ. S. Born April 1917 in Zaporozh'e Oblast, Ukrainian<br />

SSR. <strong>Russian</strong> economist. He was elected a corresponding member in 1962. Since<br />

l964, he has been an academician <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Economics Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Sciences</strong>. Since l977, he has been a board member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> GKNT General Assembly.<br />

Since l985, he has been on <strong>the</strong> Presidium <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> academy <strong>of</strong> sciences. He graduated<br />

from <strong>the</strong> Military Chemical <strong>Academy</strong> in 1942. From 1949 <strong>to</strong> 1962 he taught at <strong>the</strong><br />

Moscow Institute <strong>of</strong> Fine Chemical Technology where he headed <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong><br />

Chemical Industrial Economics and served as a Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> institute. In<br />

1963, he became Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Central Economic Ma<strong>the</strong>matical Institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

national academy. He is edi<strong>to</strong>r-in-Chief <strong>of</strong> Economics and Ma<strong>the</strong>matical Methods<br />

that is a major Soviet economics journal. His principal works deal with Soviet<br />

economics: <strong>the</strong> economics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> chemical industry, optimal functioning <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

national economy, and <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> ma<strong>the</strong>matical methods and electronic computers in<br />

planning and management. State prize, 1970. In 1979, he received <strong>the</strong> G. M.<br />

Krzhizhanovskii Prize named after <strong>the</strong> well-known power engineer for his work in<br />

energy planning. In 1981, he received <strong>the</strong> V. S. Nemchinov Prize for economics<br />

and statistics. (GSE 3, p. 370.)<br />

Granberg, Aleksandr G., D. Econ. S. Born in 1936. Specialist in planning for <strong>the</strong><br />

national economy and <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> modeling <strong>of</strong> economic research.<br />

Academician since 1992. He graduated from <strong>the</strong> Moscow State <strong>University</strong> in 1960<br />

and began working at <strong>the</strong> Computer Center <strong>of</strong> GOSPLAN, and at <strong>the</strong> Moscow<br />

Institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> National Economy. From 1963 <strong>to</strong> 1969, he was at <strong>the</strong> Novosibirsk<br />

State <strong>University</strong>, and from 1965 he has held <strong>the</strong> chair on applied ma<strong>the</strong>matical<br />

methods for economic planning. In 1969, he joined <strong>the</strong> Economy and Organization<br />

<strong>of</strong> Industrial Production Institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department, heading <strong>the</strong> sec<strong>to</strong>r on<br />

economic-ma<strong>the</strong>matical modeling and methods <strong>of</strong> optimizing terri<strong>to</strong>rial planning,<br />

becoming its Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r in 1975 and its Direc<strong>to</strong>r in 1985. He has been on <strong>the</strong><br />

Siberian Presidium since 1986. He has been Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scientific Council <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Academy</strong> on <strong>the</strong> Economic <strong>Sciences</strong> since 1985. In 1988, he became Head edi<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> journal Economics and <strong>the</strong> Organization <strong>of</strong> Industrial Production. He received<br />

<strong>the</strong> Lenin Komsomol Prize in 1968. In <strong>the</strong> early 1990s <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department<br />

established <strong>the</strong> Siberian International Center for Regional Studies in Novosibirsk<br />

that had as its Scientific Research Direc<strong>to</strong>r Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Granberg. The Center’s base<br />

institution is <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Economics and Industrial Engineering <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian<br />

Department in Akademgorodok-Novosibirsk <strong>of</strong> which Dr. Granberg is also <strong>the</strong><br />

Science Direc<strong>to</strong>r. In <strong>the</strong> process <strong>of</strong> being organized at present, <strong>the</strong> center will involve<br />

<strong>the</strong> Siberian Department, <strong>the</strong> International Regional Science Association and<br />
