volumes, covering all scientific fields, various technical documents and patents, and<br />

a unique collection <strong>of</strong> manuscripts and early printed books. The library grows at a<br />

rate <strong>of</strong> some 300 <strong>to</strong> 400 thousand books a year that includes some 40 thousand<br />

foreign publications. Scientific Technical literature translations are done at <strong>the</strong><br />

Scientific Centers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department<br />

The Scientific Centers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> are in <strong>the</strong> early phase <strong>of</strong><br />

attaining departmental status. In each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m an administrative unit is given <strong>the</strong><br />

responsibility for coordinating research, obtaining money, and recruiting <strong>the</strong><br />

scientists needed <strong>to</strong> perform <strong>the</strong> research missions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> increasing number <strong>of</strong><br />

research institutes being developed under <strong>the</strong> Centers' administrative authority.<br />

From 1944 <strong>to</strong> 1957 <strong>the</strong>re was a “Western Siberian Branch or Center”, and from<br />

1949 <strong>to</strong> 1957 an “Eastern Siberian Branch or Center.” Both <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se became<br />

departments <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> newly-established Siberian Branch <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR and evolved<br />

in<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Far Eastern Center (now <strong>the</strong> Far Eastern Department) and <strong>the</strong> Urals Center<br />

(now <strong>the</strong> Urals Department). It may be expected in <strong>the</strong> future that <strong>the</strong> centers listed<br />

below may someday reach department status.<br />

Buryat Research Center<br />

Republic Buryatia, <strong>the</strong> capital <strong>of</strong> which is Ulan-Ude, occupies a mountainous area east <strong>of</strong><br />

Lake Baikal, known as Transbaikalia (its area is 351 thousand sq.km, its<br />

population 1049 thousand people). Four fifth <strong>of</strong> its terri<strong>to</strong>ry is covered with forest.<br />
