Kabanov, Mikhail V., D. PM. S. Born in 1937. Physicist. Specialist in <strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong><br />

atmospheric physics. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Oceanology, Atmospheric<br />

Physics, and Geography Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1987. He graduated<br />

from <strong>the</strong> Tomsk State <strong>University</strong> in 1959, and began work as a researcher, was<br />

Head <strong>of</strong> a labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Physico-Technical Institute from 1961 <strong>to</strong> 1975,<br />

and Head <strong>of</strong> a labora<strong>to</strong>ry and Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Atmospheric Optics Institute in<br />

Tomsk from 1975 <strong>to</strong> 1984. In 1984, he was made Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Physico-<br />

Technical Institute. He has been a pr<strong>of</strong>essor at <strong>the</strong> Tomsk State <strong>University</strong> since<br />

1981. Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Interdepartmental Commission on Radiation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Geophysical Committee <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Presidium <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong>.<br />

Kapitsa, Andrei P., D. Geog. S. Born in 1931 in Cambridge, England. <strong>Russian</strong><br />

geographer and geomorphologist. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> OCeanology,<br />

Atmospheric Physics, and Geography Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1970.<br />

From 1953 until 1970, he worked at <strong>the</strong> department <strong>of</strong> geography <strong>of</strong> Moscow State<br />

<strong>University</strong>, becoming a pr<strong>of</strong>essor in 1966, and serving as dean from 1966 <strong>to</strong> 1970.<br />

He participated in four Antarctic expeditions and in <strong>the</strong> trans-antarctic crossings from<br />

Mirnyi Station <strong>to</strong> Pionerskaia (aya) (1956), Mirnyi <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> south pole (1959-60), and<br />

from Vos<strong>to</strong>k Station through <strong>the</strong> Pole <strong>of</strong> Inaccessibility <strong>to</strong> Molodezhaia (aya) Station<br />

(1963-64). In 1967-69, he led <strong>the</strong> Soviet Complex Geophysical Expedition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

AN SSSR <strong>to</strong> East Africa. He is also member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Far Eastern Scientific Center.<br />

He has been Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Presidium <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Far Eastern Science Center (now<br />

Department) <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR since 1970. Son <strong>of</strong> P. L. Kapitsa. He has been a<br />

member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Presidium <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR since 1971. He is Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pacific<br />

Institute <strong>of</strong> Geography <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Far Eastern Scientific Center. His major works are on<br />

<strong>the</strong> dynamics and morphology <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Eastern Antarctic ice cap. State Prize, 1971.<br />

Khudiakov, Gleb I., D. GM. S. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Oceanology,<br />

Atmospheric Physics, and Geography Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since December<br />

1987. Also member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Far Eastern Department. From 1978 <strong>to</strong> 1980, he was<br />

Chief <strong>of</strong> a labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> (Far Eastern) Geology Institute in Vladivos<strong>to</strong>k. Since<br />

1980, he has been Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pacific Ocean Geography Institute in Vladivos<strong>to</strong>k<br />

which was established in 1971 <strong>to</strong> do physical, economic geographical research and<br />

<strong>to</strong> forecast environmental changes caused by economic development. (LDA 89-<br />

Kort, Vladimir G., D. Geog. S. Born in 1914. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Oceanology, Atmospheric Physics, and Geography Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong><br />

since 1979. He was <strong>the</strong> Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Oceanology <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> USSR<br />

<strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> in Moscow until 1965. He supervised a program which had a<br />

staff <strong>of</strong> 20 doc<strong>to</strong>rs, 90 candidates and 300 junior-level scientists at that time. In<br />

1966, Kort was Chief <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hydrological Processes Labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> P. P.<br />

Shirshov Oceanology Institute. In 1982, he was <strong>the</strong> recipient <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> S. O. Makarov<br />

Gold Medal for his scientific accomplishments in oceanographic research.<br />

Kurbatkin, Gennadii P., C. PM. S. Born in 1930 in Tashkent. <strong>Russian</strong> meteorologist.<br />

Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Oceanology, Atmospheric Physics, and Geography<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1976. He graduated from <strong>the</strong> Middle Asian<br />

<strong>University</strong> (<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Tashkent) in 1953. He was a staff member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute<br />

<strong>of</strong> Atmospheric Physics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR from 1955 <strong>to</strong> 1957, <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong><br />

Applied Geophysics from 1957 <strong>to</strong> 1961, and <strong>the</strong> Hydrometeorological Service <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

USSR from 1961 <strong>to</strong> 1963. In 1963, he became affiliated with <strong>the</strong> Computer Center<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian division (now Department) <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR. In 1969, he became<br />

Chief <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Long-Range Wea<strong>the</strong>r Prediction Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Novosibirsk<br />

Computer Center, and in 1978 he also became Chief <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Physics <strong>of</strong> Atmospheres<br />

and Oceans Labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Computer Center in Novosibirsk. His works deal with<br />
