Zhuravlev, Iurii I., D. PM. S. He was born in 1935 in Voronezh. Corresponding<br />

member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Information <strong>Sciences</strong>, Computer Technology, and Au<strong>to</strong>mation<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> in 1984 and an academician <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> in<br />

1992. Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Computer Center in Akademgorodok-Novosibirsk<br />

Siberian Department. He graduated with a master <strong>of</strong> science in ma<strong>the</strong>matics from<br />

Moscow State <strong>University</strong> in 1957. He received his candidate degree in 1960 in <strong>the</strong><br />

Physical and Ma<strong>the</strong>matical <strong>Sciences</strong> from Moscow State <strong>University</strong>, and his<br />

doc<strong>to</strong>rate in 1965. He became a pr<strong>of</strong>essor in 1967. From 1960 <strong>to</strong> 1969, he was a<br />

junior researcher, <strong>the</strong>n head <strong>of</strong> a department, and Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong><br />

Ma<strong>the</strong>matics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Branch <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> academy. From 1969 <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> present time,<br />

he has headed a Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> computing center <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> academy. Since 1989,<br />

he has been a Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Comoputer Center. From 1966 <strong>to</strong> 1969, he<br />

was a pr<strong>of</strong>essor at <strong>the</strong> Novosibirsk State <strong>University</strong> in Akademgorodok, and from<br />

1970 <strong>to</strong> 1980 he was a pr<strong>of</strong>essor at <strong>the</strong> Moscow Physical and Technical Institute.<br />

Since 1980, he has been a pr<strong>of</strong>essor and head <strong>of</strong> a chair at <strong>the</strong> Moscow Institute <strong>of</strong><br />

Electronic Engineering. His research interests have included ma<strong>the</strong>matical logic, <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ory <strong>of</strong> controlling systems, image recognition, operation research, and artificial<br />

intelligence.<br />

Kuznetsov, Fedor A., D. Chem. S. Born in 1932. Physical Chemist. Corresponding<br />

member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Physical Chemistry and Technology <strong>of</strong> Inorganic Materials<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1984, and academician since December 1987. He<br />

also is a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>. He graduated from<br />

<strong>the</strong> Leningrad State <strong>University</strong> in 1955. He began work at <strong>the</strong> Inorganic Chemistry<br />

Institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department in 1958, served as an aspirant, a junior<br />

researcher, and senior researcher in a major labora<strong>to</strong>ry in that institute. From 1971<br />

<strong>to</strong> 1983, he has acted as Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Epitaxial Layers Labora<strong>to</strong>ry and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Electronics Materials Labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Inorganic Chemistry Institute in<br />

Novosibirsk, being named its Direc<strong>to</strong>r in 1983. The institute was established in<br />

1957 in cooperation with <strong>the</strong> N. S. Kurnakov General and Inorganic Chemistry<br />

Institute for <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> studying complex compounds, splitting uranium and<br />

plu<strong>to</strong>nium, and <strong>the</strong> extraction and investigation <strong>of</strong> rare earth metals. He has been a<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essor at <strong>the</strong> Novosibirsk <strong>University</strong> since 1976, holding <strong>the</strong> chair in inorganic<br />

chemistry since 1986. He is <strong>the</strong> Head edi<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> Izvestiya. In 1988 he was named<br />

chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scientific Council on Inorganic Chemistry. He is a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Electrochemical Society <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> USA--since 1979. Recipient <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> State Laureate<br />

Prize in 1981.<br />

Academician Andrei L. Mikaelian, tel.148-08-45, 135-55-51<br />

Mikaelian, Andrei L., D. Tech. S. Born in 1925. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Information Science, Computer Technology, and Au<strong>to</strong>mation Department since<br />

1984; academician in 1993. Toge<strong>the</strong>r with V. I. Bobrinev he proposed high<br />

capacity holographic memory devices in 1966, based on <strong>the</strong> recording <strong>of</strong> a large<br />

number <strong>of</strong> holograms on <strong>the</strong> same surface (or volume) <strong>of</strong> pho<strong>to</strong>graphic material.<br />
