Administrative responsibilities: Of <strong>the</strong> 20 academicians listed in this department in<br />

1989, six held responsible positions as heads <strong>of</strong> major labora<strong>to</strong>ries; two acted as<br />

Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> a SRI, and nine ei<strong>the</strong>r served or had served as Direc<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>of</strong><br />

departmental SRIs. Among <strong>the</strong> 44 corresponding members one was Vice President<br />

<strong>of</strong> a republic academy, seven headed major labora<strong>to</strong>ries, five served as Deputy<br />

Direc<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>of</strong> major SRIs, and four were Direc<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>of</strong> SRIs. Fifty-eight percent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

academicians and corresponding members <strong>of</strong> Physical and Chemical Biology<br />

Department held major scientific administrative posts in research units subordinate<br />

<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> department.<br />

Academicians--age and schools: The average age <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 20 academicians <strong>of</strong> Physical<br />

and Chemical Biology Department in 1991 was 72.65 years. This average is<br />

skewed by <strong>the</strong> fact that nine <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> academicians were over 83 years old and <strong>the</strong><br />

youngest one was 54. Two were 90; two were 89; three were 88; one was 83, and<br />

one was 81. Their educational background is interesting: Only two academicians<br />

have no degrees attributed <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>m, though both graduated from agriculturallyrelated<br />

institutions. Of <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r eighteen, <strong>the</strong> institutions which graduated <strong>the</strong>m is<br />

known in <strong>the</strong> cases <strong>of</strong> 14: Moscow State <strong>University</strong> graduated five; <strong>the</strong> D. I.<br />

Mendeleev Moscow Chemical Engineering Institute in Moscow, two; <strong>the</strong> K. A.<br />

Timariazev Moscow Agricultural <strong>Academy</strong> (now <strong>the</strong> V. I. Lenin) one; <strong>the</strong> Kazan'<br />

Institute <strong>of</strong> Agriculture and Forestry one; <strong>the</strong> Kazan' Medical Institute one; <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Erevan one; <strong>the</strong> 1st Moscow Medical Institute one; <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

Voronezh one, and <strong>the</strong> 2nd Moscow Chemical Engineering Institute one. These 14<br />

graduates attended nine different institutions. One-half <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> academicians <strong>of</strong> this<br />

department were born during or before <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> Revolution.<br />

Corresponding Members--age and schools: Corresponding members <strong>to</strong>taled 44 in<br />

1989. Ten <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 39 corresponding members whose birth dates are known were<br />

over 80 years old in 1991. The oldest member was 92 and <strong>the</strong> youngest was 48<br />

years old. The average age <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> corresponding members <strong>of</strong> this department was<br />

69.4 years. <strong>Russian</strong> scientists have pursued biological interests from <strong>the</strong> beginning<br />

<strong>of</strong> science in Russia. Only two <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 44 members appear <strong>to</strong> have no degrees; one<br />

holds a candidates degree. Institutions, where known, which graduated <strong>the</strong>se<br />

corresponding members include: Moscow State <strong>University</strong> graduated seven; <strong>the</strong> M.<br />

V. Lomonosov Moscow Institute <strong>of</strong> Fine Chemical Technology, two; The K. A.<br />

Timiriazev Moscow <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> Agriculture, one; <strong>the</strong> S. Ordzhonikidze Moscow<br />

Aviation Institute, one; <strong>the</strong> 1st Moscow Medical School Institute, one; <strong>the</strong> 1st<br />

Leningrad Medical School Institute, one; <strong>the</strong> Sara<strong>to</strong>v Agricultural Institute, one; <strong>the</strong><br />

Odessa Agricultural Institute, one, <strong>the</strong> Kuban Agricultural Institute, one, and <strong>the</strong><br />

Kazan' Institute <strong>of</strong> Chemical Engineering, one. There were four women among <strong>the</strong><br />

corresponding members <strong>of</strong> this department in 1989.<br />
