significance <strong>of</strong> bryozoans, rugozes, corals and stroma<strong>to</strong>poroids;<br />

(4.) The Labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> Paleoecology <strong>of</strong> Marine Faunas headed by L. A.<br />

Nevesskaia (aya), D. Sci., studies <strong>the</strong> composition, evolution and distribution <strong>of</strong><br />

bivalved mollusks and gastropods. Work in <strong>the</strong> labora<strong>to</strong>ry on <strong>the</strong> ecology <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

principal benthic animals in <strong>the</strong> Paleozoic epicontinental seas on <strong>the</strong> evolution <strong>of</strong><br />

those communities is under Pr<strong>of</strong>essor R. Th. Hecker;<br />

(5.) The Labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> Cephalopods under V. I. Bogoslovskii, D. Sci., investigates<br />

Paleozoic cephalopods, mainly ammonoids, nautiloids, and related groups;<br />

(6.) The Labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> Brachiopods under G. A. Afanas'eva, C. Sci., does<br />

morpho-functional analysis in problems <strong>of</strong> Carboniferous and Permian<br />

biogeography as well as producing <strong>the</strong> biostratigraphy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Carboniferous and<br />

Permian areas <strong>of</strong> Russia;<br />

(7.) The Arthropods Labora<strong>to</strong>ry under A. R. Rasnitsin, D. Sci., researches in paleoen<strong>to</strong>mology<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mesozoic biocenotic assemblages; and<br />

(8.) The Labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> Paleon<strong>to</strong>logy His<strong>to</strong>ry under V. N. Shimanskii, D. Sci.,<br />

studies <strong>the</strong> his<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> paleon<strong>to</strong>logical institutions and societies and <strong>the</strong> development<br />

<strong>of</strong> paleon<strong>to</strong>logical studies and investigations in Russia and <strong>the</strong> world.<br />

The Department <strong>of</strong> Fossil Vertebrates and Fossil Plants is under L. I.<br />

Novitskaia (aya), D. Sci., and conducts studies on <strong>the</strong> fossil fishes from <strong>the</strong> Lower<br />

Paleozoic <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Neogene inclusive. The department has three labora<strong>to</strong>ries in it that<br />

include:<br />

(1.) The Labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> Lower Tetrapods is headed by academician L. P. Tatarinov,<br />

D. Bio. S., who is also <strong>the</strong> Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> institute. Its scientists study Upper<br />

Paleozoic and Mesozoic reptiles, problems <strong>of</strong> terrestrial vertebrates in <strong>the</strong> Permian<br />

and Triassic areas, as well as <strong>the</strong> faunistic relations <strong>of</strong> ancient continents;<br />

(2.) The Labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Amphibians under M. A. Shiskin, D. Sci. studies <strong>the</strong><br />

ana<strong>to</strong>my and morphogenesis <strong>of</strong> labyrinthodonts and <strong>the</strong> evolution <strong>of</strong> on<strong>to</strong>geny;<br />

(3.) The Labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> Mammals under V. A. Tr<strong>of</strong>imov, C. Sci. is concerned with<br />

<strong>the</strong> most import and best represented fossil mammalian groups and works in <strong>the</strong><br />

fields <strong>of</strong> paleozoogeography, pale<strong>of</strong>aunistics, and paleo-ornithology (a speciality <strong>of</strong><br />

E. N. Kurochkin).<br />

The institute carries out expeditions with Mongolian paleon<strong>to</strong>logists, and since 1974, over<br />

40 volumes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se expeditions have been published by <strong>the</strong> Institute. Since 1932,<br />

in fact, over 230 volumes <strong>of</strong> Transactions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute have been published. The<br />

institute has published Trudy since 1932. In 1992, <strong>the</strong> staff <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Paleon<strong>to</strong>logy<br />

Institute and Museum <strong>to</strong>taled 250 persons, <strong>of</strong> whom scientific personnel numbered<br />

130 persons. Leonid P. Tatarinov, D. Bio. S., was Direc<strong>to</strong>r from 1975 until<br />

replaced by Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Aleksei I. Rozanov, <strong>the</strong> current Direc<strong>to</strong>r.<br />
