Fanardzhian, Vik<strong>to</strong>r V., C. Med. S. Born in 1929. (Armenian physiologist). Since<br />

1979, he has served as Vice President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Armenian <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong>.<br />

Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Physiology Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong><br />

since 1984. Since 1978, he has been Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> L. A. Orbveli Physiology<br />

Institute in Erevan. The institute was founded in 1943 <strong>to</strong> study problems <strong>of</strong><br />

physiology, biochemistry, and pharmacology. It is a leading research facility <strong>of</strong> its<br />

kind in Armenia.<br />

Fedorov, Svia<strong>to</strong>slav N., D. Med. S. Born in 1927. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Physiology Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since December 1987. In 1987, he was <strong>the</strong><br />

recipient <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> M. V. Lomonosov Gold Medal for his contributions <strong>to</strong> <strong>Russian</strong><br />

Kryshtal’, Oleg A., D. Bio. S. Born in 1945. (Physical Chemical Membrane Biology).<br />

He received <strong>the</strong> SSSR State Prize in 1983. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Biochemistry, Physiology, and Theoretical Medicine Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ukrainian<br />

<strong>Academy</strong> since 1985. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Physiology Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1987. (LDA 89-11378.)<br />

Medvedev, Vladimir I. Since December <strong>of</strong> 1987, corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Physiology Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>, and Academician Secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Nozdrachev, Aleksandr D. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Physiology Department <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> in 1993. He is currently a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bureau governing body <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Physiology Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>.<br />

Piruzian, Lev A., D. Med. S. Born in 1936 in Alaverdi, Armenian SSR. Medical<br />

biophysicist. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Physiology Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Academy</strong> since 1974. He graduated from <strong>the</strong> Erevan Medical Institute in 1961.<br />

Since 1964, he has worked at <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Chemical Physics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR.<br />

Since 1971, he has been Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Biological Testing <strong>of</strong> Chemical Compounds<br />

Scientific Research Institute in Kupavna which was established in 1973 <strong>to</strong> screen all<br />

new syn<strong>the</strong>tic chemical compounds beneficial <strong>to</strong> man and <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> environment. The<br />

institute is directly subordinate <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ministry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Medical and Microbiological<br />

Research Institutes Directly Subordinate <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Physiology Department:<br />

Retrospect: The Physiology Department is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> smaller Departments <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

academy with a membership <strong>of</strong> 11 academicians and 16 corresponding members for<br />

a <strong>to</strong>tal <strong>of</strong> 19 members. In 1980, <strong>the</strong>re were only 75 individuals listed in key<br />

research positions in its three scientific research institutes. Its size does not however<br />

diminish <strong>the</strong> significance <strong>of</strong> its scientific activity. The three institutes subordinate <strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> department are: <strong>the</strong> Pavlov Physiology Institute, <strong>the</strong> Higher Nervous Activity<br />

and Neurophysiology Institute, and <strong>the</strong> I. M. Sechenov Evolutionary Physiology<br />

and Biochemistry Institute.<br />

Organization <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Major Institutes: The Pavlov Physiology Institute in St.<br />

Petersburg has 17 labora<strong>to</strong>ries and one computer center; <strong>the</strong> Higher Nervous<br />

Activity and Neurophysiology Institute in Moscow has a Foreign Relations<br />

Department and is organized in<strong>to</strong> some 10 labora<strong>to</strong>ries, and <strong>the</strong> I. M. Sechenov<br />

Evolutionary Physiology and Biochemistry Institute in St. Petersburg had no<br />

labora<strong>to</strong>ries or departments listed in <strong>the</strong> Direc<strong>to</strong>ry from which information on <strong>the</strong>se<br />
