Alferov, Zhores I., D. PM. S. Born in 1930. <strong>Russian</strong> physicist. He has been an<br />

academician <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General Physics and Astronomy Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR<br />

and <strong>the</strong> RAN since 1979. In 1963, he proposed that heterostructures be used for<br />

semiconduc<strong>to</strong>r lasers. The CO2 gas dynamic laser that resulted was proposed by<br />

Prokhorov and V. K. Koniukhov in 1967 and built in 1970. Since 1968, he has<br />

headed <strong>the</strong> Contact Phenomenon in Semiconduc<strong>to</strong>rs labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> A. F. I<strong>of</strong>fe<br />

Physical Technical Institute. In 1984, he was awarded <strong>the</strong> U.S.S.R. State Prize for<br />

his work--with o<strong>the</strong>rs--on "Isoperiodic Heterostructures <strong>of</strong> Multi-component<br />

(Quartenary) Solid Solutions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Semiconduc<strong>to</strong>r Compounds A3B5," published<br />

from 1971-1981. In December 1987, he was made direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> I<strong>of</strong>fe Physical<br />

Technical Institute. In April <strong>of</strong> 1989 he became Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> St. Petersburg<br />

Scientific Center and was elected a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Presidium <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> academy.<br />

Academician Alexandr (Aleksandr) F. Andreev , tel. 938-20-29, 237-81-19<br />

Andreev, Aleksandr F., D. PM. S. Born in 1939. Academician <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General Physics<br />

and Astronomy Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since December 1987. Corresponding<br />

member since 1981. In 1985 he was awarded <strong>the</strong> Lenin Prize along with o<strong>the</strong>rs for<br />

his work on "<strong>the</strong> tunnel transfer <strong>of</strong> matter and quantum crystallization." Since 1986,<br />

he has been Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> S. I. Vavilov Physical Problems Institute in<br />

Moscow that was created in 1934 <strong>to</strong> do research in low temperature physics,<br />

plasma physics, <strong>the</strong>oretical physics, and power electronics. In 1984, he received<br />

<strong>the</strong> M. V. Lomonosov Prize in recognition <strong>of</strong> his scientific contributions along with<br />

K. O. Keshishev and A. Ia. Parshin.<br />

Academician Vik<strong>to</strong>r Ev. Golant, tel. 247-41-50 (SPb)<br />

Golant, Vik<strong>to</strong>r E., D. PM. S. Born in 1928. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General<br />

Physics and Astronomy Department since 1984; academician in 1993. Since 1964,<br />

he has headed <strong>the</strong> Plasma Physics Labora<strong>to</strong>ry under <strong>the</strong> Ma<strong>the</strong>matical Physics<br />

Division <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> A. F. I<strong>of</strong>fe Physical-Mechanical Institute in St. Petersburg. He is a<br />

specialist in <strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong> controlled <strong>the</strong>rmonuclear fusion. He is author <strong>of</strong> some 140<br />

scientific works on this problem.<br />

Academician Albert Ab. Galeev, tel. 333-25-88<br />

Galeev, Albert A., D. PM. S. Born in 1940. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General<br />

Physics and Astronomy Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since December 1987;<br />

academician since 1993. From 1973 <strong>to</strong> 1988, he was assistant <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Space Research Institute in Moscow, and since 1976, he has been Chief <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Interplanetary Plasma and Ionosphere Division <strong>of</strong> that institute. In 1988, he<br />

assumed <strong>the</strong> Direc<strong>to</strong>rship <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Space Research Institute. Toge<strong>the</strong>r with R. Z.<br />

Sagdeev, he has been a leader in <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> new ideas in physical kinetics.<br />
