4. Volcanology Institute in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskii.<br />

Fedo<strong>to</strong>v, Sergei A., D. PM. S. Born in 1931 in Leningrad. <strong>Russian</strong> geophysicist.<br />

Corresponding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry, and Mining<br />

<strong>Sciences</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since 1970; academician in 1993. Also a<br />

member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Far Eastern Department. He graduated from Moscow State<br />

<strong>University</strong> in 1953. From 1957 <strong>to</strong> 1971, he worked at <strong>the</strong> O. Iurii Shmidt Institute<br />

<strong>of</strong> Earth Physics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR. Since 1971, he has been Direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Volcanology Institute at Petropovlovsk-Kamchatskii (<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Far Eastern Department<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Russian</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong>) that was established in 1961 <strong>to</strong> study<br />

volcanism in <strong>the</strong> Kurile-Kamchatka zone. In 1975, he was elected vice-President <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> International Association <strong>of</strong> Volcanology and Chemistry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Earth's Interior.<br />

His principal works deal with <strong>the</strong> internal structure and seismicity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earth,<br />

properties <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earth's mantle, <strong>the</strong> mechanism <strong>of</strong> deep magmatic and volcanic<br />

activity, and long-term earthquake predictions. (GSE 27, p. 137.)<br />

Established in 1961 from a Volcanology Labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR in Kamchatka’s<br />

geological Geophysical Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Siberian Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AN SSSR.<br />

The institute studies contemporary volcanism in <strong>the</strong> Kurile-Kamchtka zone. Since<br />

1971, its Direc<strong>to</strong>r has been Sergei A. Fedo<strong>to</strong>v, D. PM. S. Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>rs:<br />

Belousov, Vladimir Iurii, since '83; Gushchenko, Igor I., since '78; and,<br />

Sugrobov, V. M., since '81;<br />

5. Soil Biology Institute in Vladivos<strong>to</strong>k. Also <strong>the</strong> Biology and Soil Science<br />

Institute. Established in 1962. Studies Agricultural problems in <strong>the</strong> Far East. Its<br />

scientists have contributed <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> a national soil map. Direc<strong>to</strong>r<br />

Tarankov, Vladimir I., D. Bio. S., since 1977. (See: Ruble, Vol. I., p. 294.)<br />

6. Bioorganic Chemistry Institute in Vladivos<strong>to</strong>k.<br />

Eliakov, Georgii B., D. Chem S. Born in 1929 in Kostroma. <strong>Russian</strong> chemist and<br />

biochemist. Corresponding member <strong>of</strong>; t;he; Biochemistry, Biophysics, and<br />

Chemistry <strong>of</strong> Physiologically Active Compounds Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> since<br />

1970, and academician since December 1987. He is also a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Far<br />

Eastern Department and since 1980, he has been deputy chairman <strong>of</strong> that<br />

Department. He graduated from <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> chemistry at Moscow State<br />

<strong>University</strong> in 1952. From 1955 <strong>to</strong> 1959, he worked in Moscow. Since 1959, he<br />
