The Structural Chemistry Department under Pr<strong>of</strong>essor I. N. Masalov, D. PM. S.,<br />

since 1959 has four labora<strong>to</strong>ries in it:<br />

1) <strong>the</strong> Physical Methods <strong>of</strong> Investigation <strong>of</strong> Chemical Bonding Nature<br />

Labora<strong>to</strong>ry;<br />

2) <strong>the</strong> Optical Methods <strong>of</strong> Investigation Labora<strong>to</strong>ry;<br />

3) <strong>the</strong> Radiospectroscopy Labora<strong>to</strong>ry;<br />

4) and <strong>the</strong> Crystallochemistry Labora<strong>to</strong>ry.<br />

The Chemistry <strong>of</strong> Materials for Microelectronics Department under<br />

Academician F. A. Kuznetsov, D. Chem. S., since 1958 is comprised <strong>of</strong> 10<br />

labora<strong>to</strong>ries:<br />

1) <strong>the</strong> Epitaxial Layers Labora<strong>to</strong>ry;<br />

2) <strong>the</strong> Dielectric Layers Labora<strong>to</strong>ry;<br />

3) <strong>the</strong> Physical Properties <strong>of</strong> Semiconduc<strong>to</strong>rs and Dielectrics Labora<strong>to</strong>ry;<br />

4) <strong>the</strong> Syn<strong>the</strong>sis and Growth <strong>of</strong> Single Crystals <strong>of</strong> Rare Earth Compounds<br />

Labora<strong>to</strong>ry;<br />

5) <strong>the</strong> Thermodynamics <strong>of</strong> Inorganic Materials Labora<strong>to</strong>ry;<br />

6) <strong>the</strong> Purity Control <strong>of</strong> Semiconduc<strong>to</strong>r Materials Labora<strong>to</strong>ry;<br />

7) <strong>the</strong> Modeling <strong>of</strong> Physico-chemical Processes Labora<strong>to</strong>ry;<br />

8) <strong>the</strong> Group <strong>of</strong> New Technological Processes for Microelectronics<br />

Labora<strong>to</strong>ry;<br />

9) <strong>the</strong> Group <strong>of</strong> High Purification <strong>of</strong> Metals;<br />

10) and, <strong>the</strong> Group <strong>of</strong> Vacuum Pho<strong>to</strong>sensitive Resis<strong>to</strong>rs.<br />

Scientists in <strong>the</strong>se labora<strong>to</strong>ries research material design, high pure substances (<strong>the</strong>ir<br />

preparation and analysis); material preparation methods <strong>of</strong> single crystals, films,<br />

multi-layer structures, high temperature superconduc<strong>to</strong>rs; structural, chemical and<br />

physical characterization <strong>of</strong> materials and solid state structures, and development <strong>of</strong><br />

new technological and diagnostic equipment.<br />

The Chemical Thermodynamics Department under Pr<strong>of</strong>essor I. E. Paukov, D.<br />

Chem. S., since 1968 has three labora<strong>to</strong>ries:<br />

1) <strong>the</strong> Thermodynamic Investigations Labora<strong>to</strong>ry;<br />

2) <strong>the</strong> Physics <strong>of</strong> Low Temperatures Labora<strong>to</strong>ry;<br />

3) <strong>the</strong> Statistical Thermodynamics <strong>of</strong> Condensed Phases Labora<strong>to</strong>ry.<br />

Research includes statistic <strong>the</strong>rmodynamics <strong>of</strong> phase transitions and interactions <strong>of</strong><br />

chemical compounds <strong>of</strong> different types; study <strong>of</strong> critical phenomena; experimental<br />

techniques <strong>of</strong> low temperature calorimetry, solution calorimetry, measurements <strong>of</strong><br />

heat capacities, vapor pressures, heterogeneous equilibria, etc; systematic<br />

experimental investigation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>rmodynamic parameters <strong>of</strong> inorganic substances,<br />

systems and processes; <strong>the</strong>rmodynamic modeling, and evaluation and estimation <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>rmodynamic parameters, and <strong>the</strong> building <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>rmodynamic properties data<br />

bases.<br />

The Information and Computer Center in Akademgorodok is comprised <strong>of</strong> a<br />

support department with a design bureau and workshops.<br />

Some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> outstanding scientists who research in <strong>the</strong> institute include: Ye. B. Amitin, D.<br />

PM. S., born in 1932, Graduated from Kharkov State <strong>University</strong> in 1955 and<br />

joined <strong>the</strong> institute in 1968--interested in solid state physics; V. R. Belosludov, D.<br />

PM. S. born in 1942, Novosibirsk State <strong>University</strong>, 1967, and joined <strong>the</strong> institute<br />
